Biography

Arthur Owen Powys was born in 1859[1].

In 1882, Arthur married Sarah Allen Clark in the Braidwood district[2]. On January 28, 1883, Sarah gave birth to a daughter[3][4], Laura Ettie Powys[5]. The birth must have been traumatic. Laura passed away shortly after her birth[6] and on 15 March 1883, Sarah died. Sarah passed away at home in Camdenville (a locality between Newtown and St Peters, NSW), aged 23[7][8].

In 1884, Arthur was married to Alicia Letitia Cahill Astill[9].

They had six children[10].

  • Edith M Powys (born 1885) registered in the Paddington district[11]
  • Bertie A Powys (born 1887) registered in Glen Innes[12]
  • Llewellyn Powys (born 1888) registered in Armidale[13]
  • Ethel M Powys (born 1890) registered in Armidale[14]
  • Amy G Powys (born 1892) registered in Armidale[15]
  • Arthur G Powys (born 1894) registered in Armidale[16]

In April 1895, Alicia and Arthur were living at "Glenloth", Jeffrey St, Armidale, where Arthur was a draftsman in the Lands Office[10].

In the early hours of the 18th of April 1895, Alicia passed away suddenly. An inquest that morning found that she had died of natural causes[10][17].

On 5th August 1896, Arthur was married to Emily Sarah Johnson at St Johns Church North Sydney[18][19][20] and they may have had no children (since none are mentioned in either his or her death notices and there's nothing in NSW BDM).

Arthur worked for the Commonwealth Bureau of Census and Statistics up to his untimely death on 8 August 1909[21].

Arthur Powys died on 8 August 1909 at home, Avelyn, Canterbury, Victoria[22].

Notes

The Sydney Morning Herald death notice[23] notes Arthur's death "At his residence, Avelyn, Canterbury", without stating NSW or Victoria. Normally, if a Sydney paper didn't specify, it might be reasonable to assume NSW.

The same death notice describes Arthur as "of the Commonwealth Statistician's Office". The Commonwealth Statistician was head of the Commonwealth Bureau of Census and Statistics, which was in Melbourne from its founding in 1905 until it was moved to Canberra in 1928[24]. So it is most likely that he lived in Victoria.
