Ambrose Poynter was born in the City of London, England.
Ambrose Poynter is the descendant of a Huguenot emigrant.

Ambrose Poynter was born 16 May 1796 in London.[1] He was the son[2] of Ambrose Lyon Poynter and Thomasine Anne (Peck) Poynter.

In his early life he travelled a lot through Europe, employed by John Nash. Later he settled himself as an architect. He designed three churches in Cambridge in his typical Palladian/Tudor style. Apart from being an architect, Ambrose was an artist and illustrator. His waterpainting drawings still can be seen in the Tate Gallery and some other museums. In the mid 1840s Ambrose was appointed Professor of Fine Arts of Kings College in London. He also was secretary of the institute of British Architects, and vice president.

Ambrose Poynter married twice, his first wife was Emily Forster, granddaughter of sculptor Thomas Banks.[3] His second wife was Louisa Noble Bell, she was born in Madras, India and the daughter of General Robert Bell.

His children are notable as well, his son Edward John Poynter was an artist, daughter Clara Bell a translator, and his other daughter Henriette May Poynter a writer and poet.

In 1858 he developed an eye affection which lead to his total blindness. Ambrose Poynter died at his home in Dover on 20 nov 1886.[4] He is buried[5] at St James Cemetery, Dover, Old Charlton Road, Dover England, CT16 2QA., United Kingdom.
