Biography

William John Poynter was born in 1880 at Stratford, Essex, England. He was the son of Thomas Poynter and Emily Fogaty.[1]

In the 1881 census, William Poynter was age 11 months living at Manby Road, Wanstead, Essex with his father Thomas W Poynter (35), mother Emily Poynter (27), half-sister Elizabeth Birch (7), sister Amelia Poynter (2).[2]

William John Poynter was baptised on 6 Feb 1884 at Haringey All Hallows, Tottenham, Middlesex.[3]

In the 1891 census, William Poynter was age 11 living at Hotham Street, West Ham, Essex with his father Thomas Poynter (45), mother Emily Poynter (37), sisters Amelia Poynter (12), May Poynter (4), brother Thomas Poynter (8).[4]

William's father died in 1898 and his mother married Thomas Bayford.

In the 1901 census, William Pointer was age 20 living at Tottenham, Middlesex with his mother Emily Bayford (46), step-father Thomas Bayford (46), siblings Elizabeth Birch (26), May Pointer (14), Rose Pointer (9). Occupation: Carman.[5]

William John Poynter enrolled in the Army Service Corps as a Driver on 28 Oct 1902 and served for 13 years until 27 Oct 1915 including 14 months as part of the British Expeditionary Force in France.[6]

William John Poynter married Caroline Alice Clarke on 26 Dec 1903 at the Register Office, Edmonton, Middlesex.[6][7] They did not have any children.

In the 1911 census, William John Poynter was age 30 living at Eastbourne, Sussex with his wife Caroline Alice Poynter (30) as lodgers in the household of William Sarson. Occupation Fish Hawker.[8]

William and Caroline adopted an orphaned child Charles Frederick Gray in 1916. His mother had died after childbirth and his father was killed in action in France during WWI.

William reenrolled in the Army Service Corps on 24 Jul 1916 and was finally discharged on 19 Feb 1919.[6]

It is not known what happened to William after he was discharged from the Army. He was not living with his wife in the 1930s. There were serveral William John Poynters living in the London area of a similar age and it is easy to confuse them in records.
