Biography

Joseph Pozzi was born about 1791 in Italy. "He was born and brought up in Italy and only left it as a refugee in company with many others during Napoleon's conquest of the peninsula, in order to escape conscription." [1] "It is thought he arrived in Elgin between 1808 and 1818 at the request of the Catholic Church to conduct work and repair on the church silver (there is no record in the church archives)." "He is first recorded as a Gold and Silversmith and jeweller working in the High Street (listed in Pigot's Directories of 1825 and 1837) and later in Batchen Street (Russell's Directory 1844) as a jeweller. He is not recorded in the Russell's Directory of 1847. In 1837 Pozzi is recorded as working with Robert Stewart (probably from a date c.1829), his wife's brother, and it may be that Robert was apprenticed to Pozzi." In the 1841 census, at his "address, Edward Tiddis, aged 20, a clerk, and Ebenezer Peddie, aged 24, a Watchmaker's Journeyman, are also recorded," "Joseph Pozzi presumably ceased business as a jeweller in the High Street around 1851, as he was not listed in the Slater's Directory of 1852..." [2]

In Scotland, he used the name Joseph. On 11 January 1820 he married Eliza Stuart in Elgin Burgh, Moray, Scotland. [3] The 1841 census records their family on Batchen Street, Elgin Burgh, Moray, Scotland and Joseph's occupation as jeweller. [4] In 1851, he was enumerated as a travelling jeweller Auldearn Village, with his family at Ritchie's Close, Elgin. [5] The family were at 26 High Street, Elgin in 1861 and Joseph was called an optician; and in 1871. [6] [7]

Joseph died at his home, 26 High Street, Elgin of old age and bronchitis on December 23rd 1871 and was buried in Elgin Cathedral Cemetery. The gravestone is a sandstone flat table which has become weathered. [8] [9]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:
