Research Notes

Granddaughter Rachel Dorsett later married Samuel Butt, Jr:

Prince George's County, Maryland Land Records 1752-1757; Liber NN {Abstract by Mike Marshall}; Page 238. At the request of George Cross the following Deed was recorded March 27, 1754 Indenture made March 16, 1754; Samuel Butt, Jr., planter and Rachel Butt, his wife in consideration of 14 pounds current money of Maryland paid by George Cross, planter have sold part of a tract called "Orphans Gift" containing 55 acres formerly granted and bequeath by Jonathan Prather, deceased by his last will and testament unto his granddaughter Rachel Dorsett which said Rachel has since been married to Samuel Butt, Jr., signed Samuel Butt, Jr., Rachel Butt in the presence of and acknowledged before Mordecai Jacob, Thomas Williams

There is a whole historical novel about the "Orphan's Gift" land: http://orphansgift.com/

Notice that dau. Rachel also received a shilling like her siblings, which indicates that she was living in 1734 when the will was made. Son Jonathan is noted deceased but not Rachel.

It would be good to have a more firm date of death.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Rachel by comparing test results with other carriers of her ancestors' mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Rachel:

Is there any chance that Jane Prather was first married to Francis Dorsett and then cousin Aaron Prather?
To all of you following this discussion: I *think* I have this wrong! (Woke up at 2 am and realized this!)

Jonathan's will mentions 2 sons and 7 daughters who were living as of 1734. The only known daughter missing is Frances...who also married a "Dorsett"...although nobody seems to know which one. IF Rachel (the granddaughter) is living with her grandfather, then it's likely her mother (at least...and perhaps her father) are deceased. Thus she would inherit her mother's part of the estate.

THIS Rachel was living at the time of her father's death, and for a good many years later. I'm thinking I should move the bio notation regarding inheritance to Frances's profile.

Thoughts?

My question related to that is - do we know who Rachel's children are? Obviously she had at least Rachel, as she is named in grandfather's will as Rachel daughter of Rachel. With the John, it is not as clear.

Also, I would like to see a research note on Frances's profile about how somebody knows she married a Dorsett.

The only one of Francis Dorsett's children born in Maryland seems to be son Francis, Jr, who was still living (and in North Carolina) when his father passed away in 1813 (see will link on his profile, which mentions only three surviving children: Francis, Henry, and Nancy (Dorsett) Teague). The others all seem to have been born after his 2nd marriage and in North Carolina.

...and surely Rachel, since she inherited the whole plantation of her grandfather in MD? And is not grandson John Dorsett a son of Francis and Rachel?

I think that both the Rachel and John Dorsett (identified as "grandchildren" in Jonathan's will) were children of Frances (Prather) Dorsett, who was the only identified child not mentioned in her father's will thus presumed deceased. John was possibly a minor, thus not left the property, although there's no mention of guardianship for either of them. It's possible that, since his wife was still living, she assumed guardianship? Check the Orphan's Court records, perhaps?

Could be... if there is any record that Frances was a child at all, and was married to a Dorsett. I haven't done any looking on that yet myself but her profile here has nothing so far.
So far as I can determine, the only place that she's mentioned is on the Prather Genealogy Web site (link above). It's generally accepted as the "gold standard" on Prather's, but I'm not sure even he has any documentation.

Is her name Rachel or Jane or Rachel Jane? Or are Rachel and Jane two different wives of Francis Dorsett?
posted by Shirlea Smith
THIS one's first name is "Rachel." She resided in Maryland (not North Carolina). The "Jane" Prather who married a Dorsett removed to North Carolina, where HER daughter (also named "Rachel") resided at the time of her grandfather's death. Merge rejected.

wait, wait... meaning this Francis husband she is attached to is or is not the correct husband?
Is the correct husband. Relax. 😎😁

I don't think Rachel Jane is right; people didn't have middle names at this time, first of all, Jonathan Prather had daughters Rachel (who married Francis Dorsett) and Jean/Jane who married a Prather cousin Aaron. I am leaning toward Rachel died in MD and Francis moved to NC.
Do we believe that it is coincidence that this Rachel and the other one happen to have the identical birthday? or does it really only belong to one of them? If so, which one?
posted by Shirlea Smith
Pretty sure that birthdate belongs to this one. Further research needed, though.

Agreed…on all counts, Kathleen.

Maybe he married a Jane in between Rachel (when did she die? had to be after 1734) and Rebecca?
Prather-2296 and Prather-103 appear to represent the same person because: same birth details, same husband (also needs a merge--research spelling first)
