Biography

Avoid this Genealogical Confusion:

Please do not confuse this man with his 1st cousin: Jonathan Prather V, aka John Prater, born in 1758 in Bedford, Bedford County, Virginia. Both were grandsons of Jonathan Prather III, b: 1696 in Calvert County, Maryland.

Name:
Name: Jonathan /Prather/
Given Name: Jonathan
Surname: Prather (aka Prater)
Birth:

Jonathan Prater (aka Prather) was born in about 1757 in Halifax County (became Pittsylvania County in 1767), Virginia. He was the son of Thomas Prater and Josie Allen. He passed away shortly after 1795 in Floyd County, Kentucky, USA.[1]

Marriage:
Marriage Date: About 1780
Married in Washington County (became Tazewell in 1799), Virginia[2]
Husband: Jonathan Prather
Wife: Sarah Elizabeth Musick
4 Children:
  1. Jonathan Prather Jr. b: ca. 1780 in Washington Co., VA
  2. James William Prather, b: 1785 in Washington Co., VA
  3. William B. Prater, b: 1787 in Russell Co., Virginia
  4. Thomas Prather, b: 1795 in Russell (Tazwell) Co., VA
Death:

Just after the birth of their 4th child in about 1795, Jonathan and Elizabeth (Musick) Prather moved their family from south-west Virginia to Floyd County, Kentucky. Jonathan Prather died shortly after the move; no exact death date or burial site is known. He was only about 38 years old.

American Revolutionary War Veteran:

Jonathan Prater and his older brother (b: 1755) Archibald Prather, both joined the Virginia Militia (American Revolution) in Henry County, Virginia, at the Chesterfield Court House on September 11, 1780.[3]

Note

"He signed the Oath of Allegiance to the United States in Henry Co., VA. on 3 Jan.,1777, all free males over 16 years of age were asked to sign this oath. On the Henry Co., VA. list are Archibald Prater, Jonathan Prater, Samuel Allen, and Electious Musick. (Archibald's brother, Jonathan Prather, was married to Elizabeth Musick, daughter of Electious.) (Jonathan Prather, born 1758 Halifax Co., VA.)"

In that same year, Jonathan married Elizabeth Musick and the 2 families moved to what is today Tazewell County, Virginia. Their land was located in what was formerly Washington (1776), then Russell (1786), now Tazewell (1799) County. About a dozen years later, Archibald Prater moved west to Magoffin County, Kentucky. In about 1795, Jonathan Prater Sr. followed him to Floyd County, Kentucky, where he died shortly after that move. He was only 38 years old.[4]

Archibald PRATER served in the Revolutionary War. He signed the Oath of Allegiance in Henry County, VA, on 1-3-1777. He entered the Rev War 9-11-1780 for 1 year and 6 months. He was a farmer. Archibald stood about 6' 1/2", had blue eyes and fair complexion. His brother, Jonathan, was of similar build and description, and also served in the Revolutionary War at the same time from Henry County, VA.
Archibald PRATER had first come down from Pittsylvania to Russell County where he met Sarah, daughter of Josiah and Elizabeth FUGATE. She was born in Frederick County, but had come with her parents several years before to Montgomery County, later to Russell County. Archibald, a few months out of the Continental Army, married her in Montgomery County.

In 1791, PRATER and possibly his brother, Jonathan, associating themselves with Ebenezer HANNA, Clayton COOK, and perhaps a few others, went by way of Cumberland Gap and across country to the head of Licking, looking for a place to settle. That was before Wayne's victory at Fallen Timbers. Wandering bands of Indians forced them either to retreat back to Virginia or plunge deeper into Kentucky. They decided on Kentucky.

This little group found a place in the present Nicholas County, then Bourbon. Here they stayed four years but they were still intrigued with the site on the upper reaches of the Licking with its fertile soil and abundant game.
They were awaiting the inevitable time when the Indians would be forced to abandon a section there. They built a fort in 1800 on the low hill where a spring was located. Selection of the site was considered necessary as a precaution against Indians, for they were not satisfied that Wayne's victory had completely subjugated the savages. But they were never destined to use the fort. Nearby settlers referred to the place as Licking Station, although the inhabitants of the small settlement called it Prater's Fort. [5]

Information for this Jonathon PRATER back to John PRATER is from a booklet, "Some People Called Prater" by Toney A. Prater.

Prather-606 and Prater-1451 do not represent the same person because: Under Construction Do Not Edit, until we get the Jonathan's straightened out. Prather-606 Jonathon Prather (1748-1829) was not married to Sarah Elizabeth Musick https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Musick-31

Prater-1451 and Prather-363 appear to represent the same person because: Duplicate locations are incorrect. I think they were mixed up with the sr's, it's, and on down the line. Just need to get them straightened out. We have a triplicate including this merge.
Sarah is currently attached to two husbands named Jonathan, and having children with both of them during the same time period. However, the two husbands have different fathers. We need to look into whether she is attached to the wrong husband, or whether he is attached to the wrong father.

Would the managers of this profile please address the proposed merge with Prater-874? Regarding the spelling of the last name, it would appear that it was changed from Prather to Prater during the lifetime of Jonathan. It seems likely that he was born Prather but changed his name to Prater, or it got changed for him by a local clerk, in the manner that often occurred in those days. It would be great if someone could provide a source that answers this question.

Prather-363 and Prater-404 appear to represent the same person because: The two profiles are the same. The birth and death dates are the same.

Will have to straighten out the spouse.

Prather-96 and Prater-404 are not ready to be merged because: This Jonathan Prather (Prather-96) and (Prater-404) are the same. Prater-404 has the wrong parents they should be, Thomas Prather I and Josie (Allen) Ming.
