Biography

Idella Sylva Lyons was my grandmother. I have very little personal information to share about her life here. From what I understand - and this could be entirely wrong - she worked as a "stage mother" for show girls and performers in Las Vegas, tending to their outfits and mending clothing items. My favorite memories of her are from 1968. She was staying with us for a while and one evening she made Chicken and Dumpling soup from scratch. Possibly the best soup made by our family that I've ever had. In the summer of 1968, we drove to San Antonio for the world HemisFair. The car was packed with my mother, grandmother, two sisters and myself and our french poodle, Suzette. We set out across the desert lands from San Bernardino in Southern California through Arizona and New Mexico, stopping to visit Carlsbad Caverns, and on into San Antonio, Texas, where we still had relatives that I had never heard of or met before. I didn't realize it at the time but it was a very significant trip for me and probably for all of the others as well. Initially it was simply a long, hot trip through a desolate land filled with cacti, barbed wire fences and an occasional Stuckey's truck stop, until we arrived at the magical world of the world HemisFair, which I don't think we were even aware was going on or planned to go to. We spent at least a day at the fair, taking in the rides and attractions, and then going to the top of the Tower of the Americas where we could see the houses that our relatives lived in with high powered binoculars. Afterward we retired at the home of our aunt Birdie, who I had never met before and fell instantly in love with.
