Biography

What we know of John Barton Pratt, including his photograph, comes from the book written by his great-grandson, Kenneth Charles Pratt.[1] Kenneth produced the seminal treatise on the the descendants of Thomas Pratt of Watertown, with a concentration on Abraham Pratt b. 1739.

According to Kenneth Charles Pratt, John Barton was born 23 Jun 1820.[1]

John Barton Pratt married Nancy M. Hall on 24 Jan 1846.[1] This marriage most likely took place at Williamston, Wayne County, New York.

1850 finds John and his wife Nancy along with their known eldest child, Alfred enumerated in the Federal Census for Williamston, Wayne County.[2]

I've included the link to the 1860 Federal Census for the township of Locke in Ingham County, Michigan for John Barton even though it doesn't exactly match our family. According to the Kenneth Charles Pratt book, John Barton Pratt did relocate to Michigan for a while.[1] The significance of this household is that it is in the same township John's brother Joseph Penwell Pratt would relocate to.[3] The first initials of the first four members of this household match the known family of John Barton. John's age is off and the two boys seemed to be 'flipped' which may be an enumerators error. The interesting thing is there is a young girl, aged 9 born in Michigan with the first initial of L. This could be a third child of this couple and according to the 1900 Federal Census, Nancy had four children.

The household for John and Nancy Pratt includes their youngest surviving son, Charles in the 1870 Federal Census for Williamston, Wayne County.[4]

The 1880 Federal Census finds just John and Nancy living in Wayne County.[5]

In the 1900 Federal Census, John and his Wife Nancy are still living alone in the town of Williamson.[6] Note that Nancy states she is the mother of 4 children 1 of whom is still alive.

John Barton Pratt would be taken in death on 9 Nov 1906[1]

Notes

According to Abraham, Father of Us All, John was a cooper and at various periods in his life owned several places in WIlliamson and Walworth. He bought entire sections of land both in Michigan and Kansas, but returned later to Williamson.[1]
