BULLET IN TEMPLE
Constable Shot Dead
TRAGEDY AT BARRACKS
Mounted Constable Vivian Thomas Pratt, aged 27, was found shot dead in his room at the Police Barracks at 9.15 this morning.
A few minutes before the tragedy took place Constable Pratt had been talking to some of his colleagues.
There was no indication that he had been worried recently, and he appeared to be in his normal state this morning.
His service revolver was found at his side. The bullet which caused his death entered the left temple.
Constable Pratt was the victim of a serious injury 12 months ago. During horse training he was rendered unconscious by a fall, and he did not recover for 36 days. The doctor considered that he was fortunate to be alive. He was not able to be sent on active duty following the accident, and was employed at the barracks, mainly in looking after the horses and doing routine work.
He joined the force on May 1, 1925, as a mounted constable. He was a returned soldier, single, and said to be extremely well liked by his comrades.
Had he lived Constable Pratt would have left the force at the end of this month. A few weeks ago he voluntarily resigned his position.
His parents reside near Two Wells.
