Biography

John Pratt, son of Phineas Pratt and Marah Priest and grandson of Mayflower passenger Degory Priest, was born about 1635 in Plymouth Colony.[1][2] John's father, Phineas, and presumably his family went to Charlestown, Massachusetts, about 1646.[3] John was not named in Phineas' will but named as deceased in a 1738 distribution to the children or their heirs.[3][4]

John married, about 1663, Ann Barker. Ann, daughter of John and Ann (Williams) Barker, was born about 1643 and died after 27 April 1695. The 1667 will of John Williams (Sr.) names his grandchild Anna, wife of John Pratt and daughter of John Barker.[2][5] [6]

As a resident of Kingstown, Rhode Island, 29 May 1671, he took the Oath of Allegiance to the Colony and the King.[2][7] John and Ann's children were registered in the "Friends" records in Rhode Island 1664-1676.[8] [6]

Within ten years, he relocated to Oyster Bay, Long Island. A 1680 record says he was "lately an inhabitant within ye Coloney of Road Island."[9][2]He was appointed keeper of Hog Island (now called Centre) in the Harbor of Oyster Bay.[9] On 9 Jan 1685 John Pratt is listed as an inhabitant of Oyster Bay.[2]

In lieu of a will, 27 April 1695, John Pratt Sr. of Oyster Bay deeded land in Oyster Bay to sons John, Ebenezer and Jeremiah Pratt. The same deed gives one third of the land to his wife Ann Pratt.[2][3]

John died after 14 Mar 1697/8, when he deeded land on Hog Island, Oyster Bay, New York, to his son Ebenezer.[2][3]

After his death, 5 Feb 1713/4 John Pratt of Oyster Bay, Queens County, Island of Nassau, Providence of New York, carpenter, granted to his brothers, Ebenezer and Jeremiah, his right to property "that was formerly my grandfathers Phenius Pratt, situated within ye colony of Boston." This clearly identifies this John Pratt as the same man born at Plymouth and a resident of Rhode Island then Long Island.[2][10][3]
