Richard Lincoln Preece Papers, 1859-1919
The son of William Martin Preece and Mary Elizabeth Giddens, Richard Lincoln Preece fought for the Union during the Civil War. Following the war, Preece joined the Texas Rangers and settled in Travis County, Texas.
Comprised of correspondence, printed material, legal and financial documents, a diary, a poem, and a memorandum book, the Richard Lincoln Preece Papers, 1859-1919, document Preece’s experiences as a soldier serving in the Civil War and as a rancher following the war. Correspondence concerns familial affairs and the ranching business (1882-1919), while a diary discusses Preece’s experiences as a Texas Ranger (1865-1867). Legal and financial papers relate to the payment of taxes and the sale of land in Travis County, as well as a certificate of discharge from the Texas Mounted Rangers (1861-1904).
