Biography

Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Preiss (also known as Charles) was born in Clausthal, Kingdom of Hannover on 29 November (baptized on 26 December) 1840. His parents were Wegearbeiter Carl Wilhelm Friedrich Preiß (1804-1891) and Caroline Friederike Henriette (Rosenthal) Preiss (1804-1889).[1]

He was aged 10 1/4 when he migrated as part of his family to South Australia on the Herder from Bremen to Port Adelaide.[2][3]

He married Bridget Quinn on 27 October 1865 at St Patrick's Chapel, Adelaide.[4]

They had children [possibly seven. - see #Research notes ] They initially lived at Port Gawler, and later at Mannanarie in the upper mid north of South Australia. Children included:

At the time of his eldest son Charles' wedding, he lived at Mannanarie.[7]

He died aged 85 years at Bowden, South Australia on 9 September 1926.[8]
