Luke Prentice, son of Lieutenant James and Sarah (Draper/Whiting) Prentice, was born at Prentice Corner, Sutton (now Northbridge), Massachusetts on February 11, 1779. [1] [2] [3] [4]
He kept the Northbridge school two years when young, then one at May River, St.Luke's Parish, South Carolina, and his after marriage he taught one year in Worcester, Massachusetts. [4]
He married Azuba Adams, daughter of Francis and Abigail Adams, of Northbridge on July 20, 1805. She was born there on June 8, 1750. [1] [3] [4]
In 1806 he was in business with Charles Prentice of Grafton and conducted a store for two years. He also learned the trade of watchmaker. About 1813 he removed to Prentice Corner and took charge of his father's farm. The farm, of one hundred and fifty acres, was in Northbridge, on which he cultivated and in 1852 petitioned the Massachusetts Legislature for the $10,000 reward offered for discovery of a remedy for the potato rot and which he thought he had made. On his farm he found many Indian relics, which he presented to the Antiquarian Society in Worcester. [3] [4]
From 1815 to 1831 he was engaged in trade, driving to Providence with hoes, scythes, guns, shoes, and other wares, then taking a sloop to Newport, New York, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Savannah, Georgia, in which markets he sold or traded his goods. [3]
He served the town as Highway Surveyor, Constable and Collector, Assessor, Selectman. He belonged to the Masonic order, being a Knight Templar.[3]
Luke died on February 7, 1857. [5] [3] [4] He is buried with Azubah in Pine Grove Cemetery, Northbridge, Massachusetts. Their inscription reads : Luke Prentice 1799- 1856 Azubah His Wife 1780-1862 [6]
As Luke died intestate, in March, 1857, their son Mellon petitioned the court to be appointed administrator which was granted the following month. [7]
His personal estate was valued at $ 458.32, of which widow Azubah was granted $ 119. 75 widows allowance on June 2, 1857, for her maintenance. In addition to household items and implements of farming, his inventory included several tools related to blacksmithing. [7]
