OBITUARY. OLD IDENTITY PASSES. Edward William Presley, an old identity in Darwin, died in Darwin Hospital on Sunday night. He had been ill for some time but had been admitted to hospital only a couple of days prior to his death. Presley was 56 years of age. He was a resident of Darwin for a number of years before the war and was prominent in the town's activities. Evacuated after the bombing, he returned to the Territory only about eight months ago and stayed for a while in Alice Springs. Recently he returned to Darwin and has been employed as a watchman by Works and Housing. A post-mortem examination revealed the cause of death as cerebral haemhorrage. Presley is survived by a widow and three children two boys and a girl. Another son was killed in a shooting mishap in Queensland last year. Presley's funeral on Tuesday afternoon was largely attended by old residents of the town. OBITUARY. DEATH OF MR. V. C. M. PRESLEY. A well-known resident of Darwin, Mr. Villiers Clarence Murray Presley, died in the hospital at seven o'clock on Saturday morning, July 14th. Deceased was formerly well known in Blackall, Croydon, and Thursday Island. He for many years, conducted a newsagency business in Darwin, and subsequently a general store at the 2½ Mile. At one time he was secretary for the Darwin hospital, was for years a member of the Darwin Town Council, and for a term held the position of Mayor. Deceased was 75 years of age. His parents came from Argyleshire, Scotland, he himself being born on a sailing ship at sea, his birth being registered at the port of Brisbane. He leaves three sons, and a married, daughter, his wife having died some few years ago. A sister, Mrs. Saxby, resides in Brisbane. He resided 27 years in the Northern Territory. The Standard extends sincere sympathy to the bereaved relatives. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, the burial at the graveside being conducted by the Rev. Housden. For several years he was a member of Darwin town council, and was also mayor on several occasions. He took part in the Labor campaign on the Croydon goldfields. He was born on a sailing ship at sea, the birth being registered at Brisbane. He was a resident of the territory for 27 years, and left three sons and one daughter.
