Research Notes

Jane (Preston) Breckenridge was not the daughter of Archibald Preston and Hon. Mary Forbes (Stewart), the Countess of Granard. This info can be found on "The Peerage"[3] but it simply a citation for an email, entitled " Liberty unknown, "re: Preston Family," e-mail message to Darryl Roger Lundy, 5 February 2008. Hereinafter cited as "re: Preston."

The following bio information can be found in Wikipedia.[4] "Married to Alexander Breckenridge in 1695* in County Londonderry, Ireland. They with their children were the first Breckenridges in the New World. Emigrated to Philadelphia PA c. 1728. She was sister of Robert Preston, first Speaker of Kentucky State House of Representatives.

"The Breckinridge family is a family of public figures from the United States. The family has included six members of the United States House of Representatives, two United States Senators, a cabinet member, two Ambassadors, a Vice President of United States and an unsuccessful Presidential candidate. Breckinridges have served as college presidents, prominent ministers, soldiers, theologians and in important positions at state and local levels. The family was most notable in the State of Kentucky and most prominent during the 19th century, during nearly one-third of which a member of the family served in the Congress of the United States."

  • The 1695 Wikipedia marriage date calls into question its accuracy, or the accuracy of her birth year.

These sources seem to concur with the majority of gene- sites I have reviewed. Unless there is some evidence showing that Jane Preston has another parent, this needs to be updated

Please respond Thanks Joe

All of these "sources" are unsourced family trees that all seem to copy one another. What we really need is something reliable like a birth record or the will of Phineas Archibald Preston.

Mosley, Charles, editor. Burke's Peerage, Baronetage & Knightage, 107th edition, and Burkes Peerage, 2003 volume 2, page 1628 and volume 3, page 3736 all indicate that Mary Stewart married Phineas Preston. But, all 3 sources only acknowledge a daughter named Mary.
