Biography

Was blind in later yrs/ S. R. PRESTON An Aged Resident Of Newton Township. Samuel Rigdon Preston, son of Samuel and Rachel Preston, was born 27, 1829, in Newton Township, Licking county, Ohio, upon the farm where he lived almost his entire life, all except the last sex years. On August 30, 1855, he married Miss Virginia Stream, and to them were born six children, two of whom preceded their father to the world beyond. The surviving children are: Wesley, who lives one mile west of Chatham; Anna, the wife of Charles Lingafelter, who lives 1 1/2 miles south of Chatham; James P., who lives in Chatham, and in whose home the father spent the last days of his life, and Belle, the wife of Dillon Hankinson, who resides in Newark. He joined the M.E. Church many years ago, while Rev. Hall was on the circuit, and during his younger years was a good help the church in its song service and also by his liberal financial support. During the last three years of his life he was stricken with blindness, which he felt was a great affliction. He died March 10, 1903, aged 73 years, 3 months and 13 days. His funeral took place Thursday from the M.E. Church at Chatham, Rev. Benzing officiating. He leaves his bereaved wife, four children and 12 grandchildren, besides other relatives and a large number of acquaintances and friends to mourn his departure. Mr. Preston was well known in his community, and his whole life, with it joys and sorrows, its successes and failures, was lived there. He was a man of force and liberal gifts in the days of his prosperity; was helpful to his neighbors, ever ready to grant favors, and was generally liked in the community.
