Biography

Mary was born in 1777 at Greenbrier County, VA, and died on 30 Aug 1856 at Hatton, Callaway County, MO. She was buried at Concord Presbyterian Cemetery, Auxvasse, Callaway County, MO.[1]

She married William E BLACK on 26 Mar 1799 at Greenbrier County, VA.[2][3] In 1838, Mary went to Callaway County, MO, with her son Samuel and his family. On 12 Oct 1838, the settlement of Thomas Johnson Sr's estate listed "A Debt due from Mary Black admist of Wm Black Decd wit Being a devision of they Negores of Wm Black Decd $358.33."[4]

  • In 1800 Mary and William were not found on the census due to the loss of schedules for several states including Virginia.
  • She was likely the female age 26-45 with William E BLACK on the 1810 census of Monroe, Monroe County, VA.[5]
  • She was likely the female age 26 to 45 with William E BLACK on the 1820 census of Union, Monroe County, VA.[6]
  • The 1830 census of Monroe County, VA, listed Mary Black with 1 male 10-14 (son William), 1 male 20-29 (son Hiram), 1 female 20-29 (daughter Mary), and 1 female 50-59 (herself). Missing family members included her husband William E Black possibly deceased, son Samuel who married that year, and daughter Margaret "Peggy" who may have married. Mary was the only Black in the county.[7]
  • In May 1830, Mary (as Polly Black) paid tuition for William Black age 13 to attend school at Monroe County, VA.[8]
  • The 1840 census of Liberty, Callaway County, MO, listed Mary Black (female 50-60) living alone next to her son Samuel Black. There were also 4 slaves in the household.[9]
  • The 1850 census of Callaway County, MO, listed Mary BLACK (60, born VA) with Susan A Black (5, b. MO) and living next door to her son Samuel. In spite of the age discrepancy, this is probably the same person the Mary BLACK age 60-70 who was next door to Samuel in the 1840 census. Susan's identity is unknown.[10]
