Sterling Price was born in Prince Edward County, Virginia, in 1809. His parents were Pugh William Price and Elizabeth Williamson.[1]

In 1810[2] and 1820[3] Pugh and his family were living in Prince Edward County, Virginia.

Sterling married Martha Head on 21 June 1833 in Randolph County, Missouri.[4][5][6] They had seven children, with five surviving to adulthood:

  1. Edwin Williamson Price (1834 - 1908)
  2. Amanda Williamson Price (1837 - 1838)
  3. Celsus Price (1841 - 1909)

  5. Martha Sterling Price Willis (1846 - 1912)
  6. Quintus Price (1851 - 1943)
  7. Athol Price (1856 - 1860)

In 1840, Sterling was living in Chariton County, Missouri.[7]

During the United States Mexican War, Sterling served as a colonel with the 2nd Regiment of Missouri Mounted Infantry.[8]

In 1850, Sterling was living in Keytesville Township, Chariton County, Missouri, and had nineteen slaves,[9] by 1860 he had reduced the number to twelve.[10] [11]

In 1860, the family was living in Keytesville Township, Chariton, Missouri.[12]

During the Civil War, Sterling's son Celsus served as part of his staff.[13]

After the war, Sterling moved to Mexico, but returned to Missouri in 1866. He applied for a pardon for his military service.[14][15]

Sterling died on 29 September 1867 in St. Louis, Missouri. He was buried at Bellefontaine Cemetery in Saint Louis, St. Louis City, Missouri.
