Biography

William R Priest appears in the 1850 Census as a part of the family of Joseph Priest (32 Yrs) and E Priest (28 Yrs). Also listed are George W Priest (10 Yrs), William R Priest (8 Yrs), M C Priest (6 Yrs), L B Priest (4 Yrs), and N J Priest (2 Yrs). They lived in Bastrop, Texas, USA. [1]

In the 1860 Census William R is found in the same family and is now 18 years old. The transcriber made an error due to the sloppy "8" written by the census taker. Note also that William's older brother has an error in his transcribed age as well. Transcribed in some records as 26, the census taker wrote "20" with a "0" that does indeed resemble some of the "6's" on the page. The entries are Joseph Priest (41 yrs), no Elizabeth is listed, confirming that her listed death year of 1859 is likely correct, Martha (16 yrs), George W (20 Yrs), WIlliam R (18 Yrs), Mary C (16 Yrs), Louis B (14 Yrs), Nancy J (10 Yrs), Joseph also 10 Yrs (both Nancy and Joseph are listed as born in Texas, while previous siblings were "Mississippi"; perhaps they were "twins"?), Alfred (6 Yrs), and James F (2 Yrs).[2]

Note that in both of these Census records, William's age confirms the listed birth year of 1842. Thus the Headstone attributed to his grave site is likely incorrect, or the grave is for someone else.

Burial: Mission Burial Park South, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas
