Biography

Darius was born in Union District, South Carolina. His parents were Joseph Prince and Milly Barnett. [1]

Darius is found in the 1840 census records for Union District. [2] The next household was Mrs Jane Greer. [3]

In February 1840 Darius purchased tact of land in Union district South Carolina. [4] On that same date in February 1840, Darius purchased another tract of land. [5]

After the census was taken in 1840 but prior to 4 October 1842 when Darius filed a report of the estate of Caleb Greer in right if his wife Jane Prince, Darius married the widow Jane Greer, probably in Union District, South Carolina. [6] Jane was the daughter of Neville Holcombe. [7] They were the parents of two daughters, Victoria Prince and Madora Prince.

At the time the 1850 census was taken, the household includes three of Jane's children from her first marriage to Caleb Greer along with the two daughters born to Darius and Jane. [8]

On 8 Sep 1853, Darius purchased a small tract of land from Jason Greer. [9]

On 14 October 1857, Darius and Jane sold a tract of land to Isaac P Murphy. [10] On 30 November 1857, Darius sold his interest in their father's estate to his brothers Samuel and Gist. [11] Sometime after this deed was written, Darius moved his family to Mississippi as they were found in the 1860 census records for Panola County, Mississippi. [12] The family was still residing in Panola County at the time the 1870 census was taken. [13]

On 28 September 1874 in Panola County, Mississippi, Darius signed a Power of Attorney to Nathan Hawkins of Union District, South Carolina. [14] Jane died on 12 March 1879. Darius is found in the 1880 census records of Sardis, Panola County as a widower. Living with him at this time were Sally Greer, his step-daughter and her daughter Sally E Harris. [15]

Darius died on 30 April 1885 in Panola County, Mississippi and is buried in Davis Chapel Cemetery. [16]
