William Pringle of Smailholm was the son of David Pringle of Smailholm (Ranger of the ward of Tweed, died 1467).

He and his elder brother David were subscribing witnesses in the sasine of Margaret, queen of James IV, in her jointure lands of Ettrick Forest, 01 June 1505.

His property included:

  • 1488 a tack of the forest steid of Caddonlee.
  • 1509 a tack of Torwoodlee.
  • 1509 a charter of quarter of the barony of Cliftoun, Roxburghshire, which afterwards was sold to another branch of the Pringles.

He was the 1st Laird of Torwoodlee.

He was the father of George Pringle, 2nd Laird of Torwoodlee.

William was slain at the 1513 Battle of Flodden.
