Biography

The surname is found spelled both Pritchett and Pritchard.

Zachariah Pritchett born abt 1775 in Beaufort Co NC, there is no proof of this statement but the 1840 census Morgan Co KY shows his age was 60-70.

Marriage bond for Zachariah Pritchett and Peggy Chilton says she was the daughter of William Chilton. ^[1] Early researchers mis-interpreted the early writing to be Peggy Clutten. This mistake continues to be used in family genealogies in spite of evidence to the contrary. ^[2]

In 1800 Zachariah Pritchett is listed in the census of Surry Co NC as Zach Prichard next to Phil Prichard. The 1810 census of Surry Co NC has Zacha Prichard on p 164. Surry Co NC Tax list 1812 Zack Prichard has 375 acres in Capt Underwood's District. The 1815 tax list of Surry Co NC lists Zach Prichard owning 300 acres Beaver Dam. The 1820 Census for Floyd Co KY lists Zachariah on p 25. He is in the 1830 p 63 and 1840 p 315/317 census for Morgan Co KY and on the tax lists of Morgan Co KY from 1820 to 1843. He lived on the Middle Fork of Little Sandy River near the towns of Lenox and Dingess not far from West Liberty, KY.

He was living in Surry County, North Carolina in 1812. The following were listed in that list: Zack Pritchard--375 acres--Mitchell's River; Jesse Pritchard--373 acres; Philip Pritchard--200 acres ^[3]

By 1815 Surry County tax lists show the Pritchett family had increased their farmland. Listed on the tax list were: Prichard, Zack 300 acres Beaver Dam; Prichard, Philip 400 acres; Prichard, Joseph 100 acres Deep Creek and 100 acres Dutchman's Creek.^[4]

By 1820 Zachariah Pritchett was living in Floyd County, Kentucky where he was found on the census.

Morgan County was created from Floyd County, Kentucky in 1823. Zachariah's name is found on the tax lists from 1829 to 1843 owning land on the Middle Fork of Little Sandy River.

He lived in Morgan County, Kentucky in the census of 1830 and 1840. He died after 1843 when his name is last found on the tax list.

Research Notes

There is a military service record for Zachariah Pritchett who served as a Private in the Virginia Militia during the War of 1812.^[5]
