Antonia (Procházka) Frantel lived in Appalachia, in New York. See Appalachia Project.

Antonie Procházka was born July 4, 1875 in Hrabeschin, Časlau, Bohemia, Österreich (now called Hraběšín, Kutná Hora, Central Bohemia, Czech Republic), daughter of Joseph Procházka and Marie Čermák. She was christened on July 9, 1875 in the same place.[1]

On March 1, 1898, Antonie, aged about 23 (listed as 19), boarded the S.S. Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse at Bremen, Germany and sailed for 9 days, arriving at the Port of New York on March 9, 1898.[2]

Antonie, age 26, and Joseph Anton Čapek, age 26, were married on September 21, 1901 in Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States. Joseph was born in Dolní Krupá, Mladá Boleslav, Bohemia, Austria. He was the son of John Čapek and Frances (Bemák) Čapek.[3]

They had their first child Rosie Čapek on July 23, 1902 in Manhattan, New York City, New York. They were living at 311 East 71st Street. Joseph was working as a carpenter.[4] Their second child Joseph Frank Čapek was born March 3, 1904, also in Manhattan, however, they were living at 428 E. 73rd Street.[5] Sadly, he would die only 7 days later.[6] They had their third child at the same address, Antonia Čapek, on April 28, 1905.[7]

In the 1905 New York State Census, Antoine, age 30, was enumerated in the household of her husband, Joseph Capek, at 428 E. 73rd St. in Manhattan, New York, New York. He was working as a carpenter and she was keeping house and taking care of her two young daughters.[8]

Joseph and Antonia had a third child, Jaroslaf Čapek, on February 28, 1907. They were living at 1847 East "I" Avenue in Manhattan. Joseph was listed as Anton on this birth record and was still working as a carpenter.[9] This child would live longer than his older brother, however, he passed away on July 27, 1907, just one day shy of being 5 months old.[10]

Antonia's husband, Joseph, passed away on January 29, 1908 in Manhattan, New York at the age of 33. His cause of death was cirrhosis hepatis, for which he had been treated for from January 7 to his time of death. At the time of his death they were living at 1441 Avenue A.

In the 1910 US Census, Antonia, age 32, was enumerated as the head of household at 333 East 75th Street in Manahattan Borough, New York, New York. She was a widow living with her two daughters and a boarder. She was working as a laundress out of her home on her own account. It was noted that she had given birth to 2 children, both of whom were still living (this is incorrect per above). She was born in Bohemia Austria, as were both of her parents, and had immigrated to the U.S. in 1898. She could speak English and could read and write.[11]

Her daughter, Antonia Čapek died on May 11, 1913 and was buried in the same plot as her father in St. Michaels Cemetery in East Elmhurst, Queens, New York.[12] After losing her second daughter, she apparently was told if she wanted her remaining daughter, Rosie, to be healthy and live she would need to leave Manhattan.[13]

Antonia, age 38, and Leo John Frantel, age 30, were married about 1914. Leo was born in Bohemia. They had their first child, Harry John Frantel, on May 10, 1915 in Elmira, Chemung, New York.[14]

In the 1915 New York State Census, Anette, age 35, was enumerated as the wife of the head of household, Leo Frantl, at 707 Benjamin Street in Ward 6 of Elmira, Chemung, New York. She was living with him as well as her daughter and infant son. Both she and her husband's citizenship status was noted to be alien and she had been in the United States for 14 years.[15]

Research Notes

  1. Family lore says she was adopted by a "family who owned an inn."[13]
  2. 1900 US Census: Searched the 1900 Census, E.D. 712, for the addresses 422 E. 75th and 424 E. 75th, the addresses listed on their marriage record. No Čapek or Procházka at those addresses, and neither Josef nor Antonia were in that enumeration district (searched page by page). Rienerth-1 19:23, 24 February 2025 (UTC)
  3. Marriage to Leo Frantel: Searched 1914 New York State Marriage Index on InternetArchive.org and could not find Capek, (Soundex Code: C120), Prochazka (Soundex Code: P622), or Frantel (Soundex Code: F653). Searched 1913 and 1914 Manhattan Marriage Index on InternetArchive.org and could not find Antonia under Capek, Cepek, Chapik, Czapek, Prochazka or Leo under Frantel. Rienerth-1 19:23, 24 February 2025 (UTC)
  4. 1940 US Census: Not sure why she is enumerated alone and with widowed as her marital status. Leo shows up in the 1940 Elmira City Directory,[28] as well as the 1941.[29] There is also a newspaper article that their son, Frank, was visiting them at the Washington Street address in the first week of May 1940.[30] Rienerth-1 18:55, 25 February 2025 (UTC)
