The Andorran Monarchy
Andorra’s unique political structure does not include a hereditary monarchy. Instead, the co-princes of Andorra are the Bishop of Urgell and the President of France. Their princely titles are not inherited but are associated with their respective positions within the Catholic Church and the French government.
An intriguing episode in Andorra’s history occurred in 1933 when Boris Mikhailovich Skossyreff, a Russian adventurer, attempted to claim the monarchy of Andorra. He briefly styled himself as King Boris I, having misrepresented himself to Andorran officials as a member of the European aristocracy. His faux reign was short-lived and is most remembered for his declaration of war on the Bishop of Urgell. In response, the Bishop sought assistance from Spanish authorities. The Spanish Civil Guard dispatched a team to arrest Boris, who was subsequently transferred to Barcelona and brought before a judge. The remainder of his life was largely spent in Spanish, French, and Soviet prisons.
