The Bengali Monarchy

For much of its history, Bengal was split up into several independent kingdoms, completely unifying only a few times. After the decline of the Mughal Empire, the Nawabs of Bengal and Murshidabad ruled over Bengal. Following the Battle of Plassey in 1757, and the subsequent execution of Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah, the East India Company formally established control over Bengal, and the Bengal Presidency was established. The position of Nawab continued for several generation until 1880, when Nawab Sayyid Mansur Ali Khan abdicated and the position was abolished.
