The Bruneian Monarchy
The Bruneian monarchy was established in the 13th century, when a prince from western Borneo became the first sultan. The House of Bolkiah is the current ruling royal family of Brunei Darussalam. It is composed of the descendants of the first sultan, Sultan Muhammad Shah, and his family. The current Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, is the head of state and absolute monarch of Brunei, as well as the head of government in his capacity as Prime Minister. Hassanal Bolkiah has been on office since 1967 and is Brunei's only sultan since the nation became independent in 1984.
