The Bulgarian Monarchy
Although the Bulgarian monarchy can trace its origins as far back as 681AD, the modern Bulgarian monarchy dates back to the nation's liberation from the Ottoman Empire in 1878, with Alexander I as its first king, adopting the title knyaz. When formal independence was proclaimed under his successor, Ferdinand, in 1908, the title was elevated to the customary tsar. During the reign of Tsar Ferdinand I, Bulgaria fought in the Balkan Wars and World War I, after which the country was forced to cede territory and pay reparations to the Allied Powers. Ferdinand I was succeeded by his son, Boris III, in 1918. During Boris' reign, Bulgaria became an authoritarian state and allied with Nazi Germany during World War II. Boris III died in 1943, and his son Simeon II, just six years old became the last king of Bulgaria. After the monarchy was abolished in 1946, Simeon was sent into exile, and Bulgaria became a socialist republic under Soviet influence.
