About the Project

You may also wish to visit the Rickards One Name Study at the Guild of One Name Studies as the two names are very closely linked.

It is highly recommended that male Ricketts/Rickett/Rickards take the FTDNA Y-chromosome test available at https://www.familytreedna.com/products/y-dna#compare

Y-37 is a good starting point but everyone should aim for the BigY as this opens many more doors.

If you use Facebook please consider joining the Ricketts Ancestry Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/482477365192287

The Ricketts Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the [1] Ricketts name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Ricketts name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual team studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Ricketts), by time period (18th Century Ricketts), or by topic (RickettsDNA, Ricketts Occupations, Ricketts Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Also see the related surnames and surname variants.

DNA testing has been a major breakthrough in tracing distant relatives and can be split into 2 categories; autosomal DNA and Y-chromosome/mitochondrial DNA. Autosomal (such as Ancestry) can take you back 5 or 6 generations and give clues as to your ethnic make-up.

However, for tracking surnames back through the centuries, Y-chromosome testing is a much more powerful tool.
