Project: Earl Grey’s Famine Orphan Scheme 1848-1850

Part of the Irish Roots Project

Between 1848 and 1850 over 4000 adolescent female orphans emigrated from Irish workhouses to the Australian colonies, mostly between 14 and 20 years of age arriving at Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. Their emigration has become known as the ‘Earl Grey scheme’ after its principal architect, Earl Grey, Secretary of State for the Colonies in Lord John Russell’s Whig government at the time of the Great Irish Famine.

This project is a sub project of Project: Australia, including the Australian Convicts and First Settlers project and a sub project of Project: Irish Roots

Mission

This project seeks to document the profiles of all the young Irish women who emigrated to Australia under the Earl Grey Famine Orphan Scheme between 1848-1850.

As Tom Power, Chairman of the Great Irish Famine Commemoration Committee (GIFCC) so eloquently remarked at the unveiling of the Earl Grey Famine Memorial in Sydney in 1999, they are a continual reminder of the many terrible realities, similar to the great famine of Ireland, occurring in the world today and which cry out for our compassion and concern. [1]

It is only appropriate that we honour their lives by recognising them as one of the key groups of early European Settlement in Australia.

Task List

Project members can help the project by undertaking the following tasks:-

  • Identify relevant profiles by using the source database at the Irish Famine Memorial Sydney, including the memorial monument and other orphans identified in the database.
  • Add project template to each profile, see below.
  • Action maintenance categories by finding relevant sources and improving profile biographies.

Templates

Please add the attached template to any profiles relating to Earl Grey's Famine Orphan Scheme.

{{Earl Grey|Location=Ireland}}

You should be aware of the County in Ireland that the emigrant called her 'native place'. This will both add the template and put the girl in an Irish Family Orphans category for that county. Please add it as per the following example:

{{Earl Grey|Location=Kerry}}

These will produce:

Earl Grey Scheme
... ... ... was an Irish famine orphan who emigrated to Australia between 1848-1850.
