European Royals and Aristocrats 1500-Present (Excluding British Isles)
This project encompasses people that were royals, aristocrats and nobles from 1500 (the 16th century) to the present, excluding England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. See list at bottom of page for links to other projects that include other time periods and the British Isles.
This Project is for those interested in improving the profiles of the European royalty, aristocrats and nobility and their descendants.
- Royals are/were the monarchs and their immediate family. See the following Wiki article re: royalty: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_family
- Nobles are/were the highest social class and generally held land or an office in exchange for allegiance and services to a monarch or higher-ranking nobleman. See the following Wiki article re: nobility: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobility
- Aristocrats are/were persons with elevated social status and generally held titles granted by a monarch. See the following Wiki article re: aristocracy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aristocracy_(class)
- Gentry are/were persons with elevated social status, often called ladies and gentlemen, without titles or coats of arms. See the following Wiki article re: gentry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gentry
It's important to remember that these ancestors are massively common--that is, thousands of WikiTree members share them; working on their profiles can be tricky and requires a high degree both of genealogical knowledge and of familiarity with WikiTree procedures. This is the era when thousands of people connect with hundreds of thousands of royal and other aristocratic lineages.
For the naming standards, see Name Fields for European Aristocrats as well as the section located further down on this page. All users are encouraged to also read WikiTree's guidelines on Name Fields. If you have a question with regard to what to enter where, ask before doing by posting a question on the G2G forum in Special Projects, and be sure to use the EuroAristo tag. You also should feel free to contact John.

Profile Improvement Checklist
- At the top of the profile page text box, add the project box for the project, which you can find here .
- Add sources. Many of the sources listed on the Magna Carta project resource page are excellent sources for medieval profiles. See this list of resources here.
- Create and/or edit the Biography with footnotes, using either narrative or timeline styles.
- Add Medieval Lands Template at the very end of the text box, (see the end of this page in edit mode to copy/paste Template).
- Add Coat of arms image if available; check box "set as primary photo"; add source and copyright in the Comment Box below the image (add the blazon if you have it).
- Add images of castles, effigy, etc. as appropriate, being sure to include source and copyright information in the Comment box under the image.
- Tips on labeling images: scroll down in edit mode on the image until you see the title in the edit box and delete or replace 'image 1' 'image 2' etc. Then scroll to the end of the page and click save. Save the comment box first, and then "save as thumbnail" if it is a coat of arms, and last save the image title.
Profile Maintenance and LNAB Selection
All users are encouraged to first read WikiTree's guidelines on Name Fields for European Aristocrats. Then read Name Fields.
Last Name at Birth
- LNAB: Last Name At Birth should be one word
- EuroAristo project members decided that Fitz- names should be written with mid-caps, that is, a capital letter for the father's name. For example, write FitzAlan, FitzGeoffrey, FitzGerald, etc. This is the same pattern as used in names with Mac-: MacMurray, MacDonald, etc. Do not include a space. As Wikitree users encounter these names, we request that they change the capitalization for consistency.
- For the LNABs that have been established, see Proper Spelling of LNABs.
- For others, ask on the G2G forum, remembering to tag your post with euroaristo.
Prefixes, Suffixes, Titles
- PREFIX FIELD: This is for a title such as 'Sir', TRt Hon, The
Lady (for wives of Barons only),, Lady or 'Reverend'. A man who was knighted was called Sir, the DO NOT USE this field for long titles, such as 'Earl of Angus'. Titles such as that belong in the 'Other Nickname' field.
- PREFIXES IN LAST NAME AT BIRTH FIELD: in cases like de Quincy, prefixes go with the surname in the Current Last Name field, EXCEPT when they are the last name at birth (LNAB) like St John. "St" is a prefix which stays with the surname; that is, "St John" goes in the LNAB field, and St is not dropped nor separated out into the prefix field.
- The common "de" before a surname does NOT go in the LNAB field; it goes with the surname in the Current Last Name field while the surname, ONE word, goes in the LNAB. Example: Last name at birth: "Villefort", Current Last Name: "de Villefort". The exception to this is de Vere. Members of this family should have both words in the LNAB field.
- PUNCTUATION: The correct style is to NOT use a period after a prefix such as Rev or Capt and this includes the prefix "St" (Saint).
- There is NO leeway on the rules for prefixes and suffixes; that is, those fields cannot be used for anything else.
- SUFFIXES IN LAST NAME: Jr, Sr, III, for moderns, and occasional KG, KT, KCMG, KB, KP, KBE, KCVO, GCMG, GCVO, Bt (all of which would also have Sir in the Prefix; note that Knights Bachelor have no suffix), OM, PC, LVO, CVO, CBE, OBE, MBE, CdeG, TD, DSO, VC, MC, and BEM for medieval and modern profiles go in the suffix field. NOTHING else goes in the suffix field.
- TITLES: Titles DO NOT go in prefix or suffix fields. They go in the biography. However, what people were called (King of England, Duc d'Angoulême, Lord Mountbatten, the Fat) belongs in the OTHER NICKNAMES field.
- ALTERNATE SPELLING OF LAST NAME: alternate spellings go in "Other Last Names"
- PATRONYMICS: Patronymics are middle names, (unless nothing else is available)
- WELSH NAMES: Welsh names are a muddle. Write a question on the G2G forum and get input from other before proceeding.
- We use the native language of the person within reason. Wikipedia is very good about translations.
Numerals in a Name
- If there is a numeral, such as Henry III of England, his name at birth is Henry, preferred name is Henry III, Last Name At Birth is Plantagenet, Current Last Name is of England.
Merging Profiles
- When merging always select the lowest correct LNAB. To understand the importance of this please see the page on project protection and the Supervisor page on project protecting and merging.
Sources, Project Box and Templates for Profiles
The project box below should be added to profiles that fall within the project by adding {{European Royals and Aristocrats}} to the biography of the profile. At the same time, be sure to add the project as a PM (profile manager). If you aren't authorized to do this, then contact one of the project managers to do this.

Guide for Research
There are a few things we suggest you do to participate in the project on WikiTree.
- If you do not already have a project badge, which shows everyone you are part of the EuroAristo Project on WikiTree, contact Kathy and let her know you'd like to be a part of the project.
- Once you are a member, add the EuroAristo tag to your following feed so you'll see G2G discussions, updates, and opportunities to help out as other members pass lines they cannot pursue on to others.
- Visit our Google+ Community for weekly updates on progress, general news, and chatting with other members.
- If a profile strikes your fancy, but it is a private one, just send a message to Kathy or the manager (most likely a project member), and we can have you added so you can work on it.
- Keep all profiles as either Open - so anyone can jump in and help - or if the person is still alive (or might be) Private with Public Biography and Tree, so it can be easily referenced for others working on the same tree.
- If you have a question or need help, please post a new question in G2G. Be sure to tag it with [euroaristo] so the project members see it and we can step in to help. Use whatever surname is appropriate, as well, as many community members at large can help, too.
- This project is very important. Good research is very important. Give what time you can, even if it is only an hour or two a week. That little bit can accomplish a lot.
- THANK YOU for volunteering. This project would be impossible without the incredible volunteers here at WikiTree!
- If you come across fantastic profiles we can feature (or if you fix/improve on one) in the Profile of the Week or submit to the This Day in History/WikiPick of the Day feature on the blog, put them under the appropriate heading on this page.
Goals/Priorities
- Get the name in the LNAB (last name at birth) field correct. We have a large number of profiles that were created, and new ones that continue to be created, with the wrong information in the LNAB field. We need to have people identify these profiles and fix them when possible (if you are a profile manager or notice it on an orphaned profile, you can make these changes). When you locate profiles and are unable to fix the LNAB, bring them to the attention of a leader with the ability to correct the LNAB field. These profiles include those that have a prefix or preposition, such as de, le, of, l' as part of their LNAB (for example, le Bigod in LNAB field needs to be changed to Bigod, and then Current Last Name (CLN) field changed to le Bigod). There are A LOT of profiles needing this attention.
- Merge duplicate profiles. Back when WikiTree started, all GEDCOMs were allowed to be uploaded, creating a huge number of duplicate profiles. Duplicate profiles continue to be created, and we constantly need to be on the lookout for duplicates. Once a merge is completed, DON’T STOP THERE. Go into the newly merged profile and clean up the Biography/text section, deleting duplicate information.
- Have all profiles as well-sourced as possible and conforming to the WikiTree Style Standards.
- Include correct parents, spouse(s), and children.
- Have appropriate categories listed in all Biography areas.
Profile Management Information
Profiles are managed by a small number of managers (frequently just one), as assigned by the user group. Management of 300+ year old profiles is treated differently than that of more modern profiles. For more information on this click here. Please understand that these profiles were created by many users and collaborated on by the group. Profile managers are not responsible for accuracy or content (though of course we try to improve it when we can).
