Project: Global Cemeteries/January 2015 Free For All Challenge

Contents

The Challenge

Make the most contributions to the Global Cemeteries Project. All activities count!

Project members in the north probably have a lot of photos gathered up from the summer, so this challenge is a push for us to get those photos transcribed and added to WikiTree profiles! Cemeterists further south might be out visiting their local cemeteries in full force in January, so photographing tombstones counts, too!

The Winners

The winner of the challenge will be the person who earns the most "points", where each tombstone photographed, name transcribed, photo added to a profile, and profile connected to the big tree gives you one point.

What will you win, you ask? Fame, glory, and bragging rights, of course! Also, there will be a badge for the winner.

Leaderboard

This table will be updated throughout the month with the top 3 participants for total points.

Rank Name Points
1st Chris Newcomb 8000
2nd Myrtis Jane Bishop 4374
3rd Star Kline 4356

The Rules

  1. All rules of the Global Cemeteries Project apply. No copying of pictures from other websites. No damaging tombstones (eg. by attempting to clean them, doing rubbings, etc.).
  2. Be respectful of mourners! Give a very wide berth to funerals, and to people visiting graves.
  3. Photos added to WikiTree must be ones you took yourself, or ones you have permission from the photographer (another project member, a friend, etc.) to post.
  4. Transcriptions must be done from the photos taken by you or another project member; details cannot be copied from Find a Grave or other sites.
  5. Profiles can be created through GEDCOM imports, but you must add the imported profiles to the appropriate cemetery categories and do any necessary cleanup.

Earning Points

Here are some details on how to count the points for each activity:

  1. When photographing tombstones, each tombstone counts as 1. This is true regardless of how many people are named on the stone or how many photos you take of it.
  2. When transcribing photos, each person buried there counts as 1. For example, if there is a tombstone of a husband and wife, they would each have one line in the table of interments, so transcribing that stone would count for 2.
  3. You earn 1 point for each profile you create of a person buried in a cemetery. The profile cannot be a duplicate (as far as can be determined), and must have the cemetery category added to it.
  4. When adding photos to profiles, each person counts as 1. So to continue the previous example, the photo of the couple's tombstone would be linked to both profiles (note: do not upload the same photo twice!) and would count for 2. Every profile counts, whether you just created it for this challenge or it already existed on WikiTree.
  5. Global Family Reunion Project tie-in: Each profile from a cemetery you're working on that gets connected to the tree is worth 1 point. So if you create a new profile based on your cemetery data, or add a tombstone photo to an existing (unconnected) profile, and then connect that profile to the world tree (check for connections using the Connection to AJ tool), you get another point!

For example, say you find a tombstone for a family of five. You photograph it, transcribe the info onto a table on the cemetery's free-space page, create the profiles for the family, upload the photo and attach it to each family member, and then connect the family to the world tree. You'll get 1 point for the photo, 5 for the transcription, 5 for creating the profiles, 5 for adding the photos to the profiles, and 5 for connecting them to the tree, for a total of 21 points.

Participants

You can join at any time, even after the challenge has started! As long as you're signed up before the end of the challenge, and count the contributions you made during the month of January.

Please add a subsection here with your name and a link to your profile ID. Once you've started participating in the challenge, you can list the cemeteries you've worked on (please include links to the free-space pages), along with the number of points you've earned for each activity. Lianne will keep a list of people currently in the lead updated periodically throughout the month, based on what you enter below.
