Project: Global Family Reunion/Note-vember Challenge 2014
Contents |
The Challenge
"Note-vember" is a month-long challenge running from November 1st to 30th. Participants will create profiles for Notable people, write their biographies, and connect them to the world wide tree.
Who Counts As a Notable Person
The Notables project uses Wikipedia's notability guidelines as a standard. Generally if a person has a Wikipedia article, they are considered Notable. However, if the person does not appear in Wikipedia and you can justify their fame (or infamy!) they count for this challenge.
Winners and Scoring
The winners are the three people who earn the most points, and they get bragging rights and a shiny Note-vember Winners badge. Anyone who earns 30 or more points gets a Note-vember Challenger badge.
Points
How do the points work?
- 0.5 points for creating the profile of a Notable person.
- 1.5 points for categorizing a Notable person, writing a biography, and adding a picture.
- 2.5 points for connecting a Notable person to the world wide tree.
- 2.5 points if a profile you wrote the biography for gets nominated for Profile of the Week. (No fair nominating yourself!)
You don't need to create a profile in order to earn points in the other qualifications. All profiles of Notable people on WikiTree are fair game!
Tracking Your Points
Each Saturday in November, Erin Breen will open a question in G2G, with a title like "Note-vember Challenge Week of November 1-7." During that week, when you create or edit a profile that qualifies for points, share a link to it in the G2G thread along with your qualifying actions (create, biography, connection). At the end of the week, Erin will use the posts in the thread to update the score board.
A bonus of using G2G is that we can see what other competitors are doing and get ideas for new people to add to WikiTree, and to nominate well-done profiles for Profile of the Week.
Participants
Add your name to the list below if you'd like to participate. You can join in any time in the month of November:
- Erin Breen - since I'm the challenge admin, I'm not competing to win. I am tracking my profiles, though. If I create a profile that you want to work on, contact me and feel free to snag it for points.
- Matt Pryber - , I'm not competing to win. I am tracking my profiles, though. If I create a profile that you want to work on, contact me and feel free to snag it for points.
- Kitty Cooper-1 Smith I'm in.
- Doug Lockwood Count me in...sounds like fun.
- Mike Hruska This will give me a chance to really work on my Italian profiles! Yes! Can't Wait!
- Lianne Lavoie - Hopefully this'll motivate me to add some of the Canadian notables I never seem to have time to work on!
- Pamela Lloyd - I'll put my two cents worth in. Mostly, I expect I'll be adding some notables with their immediate families, and contributing to biographies.
- Star Kline - I joined last week, and learned so much by working on several interesting profiles. I strongly encourage others to join this project!
- Ron Norman - I am in. Too bad we didn't start a few days ago when I added all of the Doctors from Doctor Who!
- Karen Tobo I decided to join at tonight's David Sedaris performance.
- Lucy Lavelle I love this idea!
- Isara Argent I worked all day yesterday on Charles Thomson, adding his wife and connecting him to some other profiles eventually. (He was sec of state of the first continental congress). If I get some points, great; I learned a lot.
- Laura Lee Scott I've been working on Schoolcraft-135. He is so interesting. I came across him years ago while working in UWF Library and taking a course on Native Americans.
- Bob Fields I'd like to work on US senators/governors, Academy Award winners, missing European royalty especially from Germany, and military leaders (in addition to 'Today in History').
- Dan Thompson Working on US Politicians and namesakes of US counties.
