Research Tips

  • Know the original Greek spelling of family names
  • Be aware that names may be spelled differently
  • Search using both Greek and Latin alphabets
  • Identify the specific village or town of origin
  • Be aware that borders and place names have changed over time
  • Many records aren't digitized yet
  • Several key factors explain why Greek records are limited online:
    • Many records were destroyed during World War II (1939-1945) and the Greek Civil War (1946-1949)
    • Many records were also destroyed due to natural disasters and fires at local archives
    • Turkish occupation led to gaps in record-keeping
    • Strict Greek privacy regulations
    • Many records considered too recent to publish
