Mission

Iceland Project is a project for WikiTreers, of any nationality, who are interested in making the Icelandic profiles at WikiTree the very best they can be. Members of the project should actively be working on improving existing Icelandic profiles as well as increase the number of new, well-sourced, profiles for people born in Iceland.

Goals

The ultimate goal is to make the Icelandic profiles at WikiTree the very best they can be.

To help achieve our goals, project members can help improve Icelandic profiles by;

  • including quality sources (mainly original sources like church books)
  • writing biographies (and cleaning up biographies)
  • help eliminate duplicate profiles by merging
  • working on the Suggestion list for Iceland to help clear database errors
  • to identify profiles that should be Project Managed (and perhaps project protected)

Iceland project goals also include;

  • to have members helping with questions related to Iceland on the G2G forum
  • to help monitor the Icelandic category system and keep it navigable and useful

How to Join

In order to join any project on WikiTree, you must first be a WikiTree member. If you are not yet a WikiTree member, see How to Use WikiTree to get started.

You should also be willing to actively participate in the project and contribute to the project's goals. We recognize that people lead busy lives and may not be active on WikiTree every single week of the year, but you should at least have the intention to contribute towards the project's goals on a somewhat regular basis.

If you "just" need help with your Icelandic ancestors you can start by reading "Getting Started with Genealogy in Iceland". The best place to ask questions is in G2G, remember to add the tag "Iceland" and/or the tag "Nordic".

How to help

The best place to start is with your own ancestors. Can you improve your ancestor profiles by adding reliable sources and writing biographies? Are their names correctly spelled using á, ð, é, í, ó, ú, ý, þ, æ, ö? Have you checked your suggestion report lately?

Here is the Iceland project's Suggestion List. Working on these is a great way to contribute.

At different times there will be MiniChallenges to work on. Even though a MiniChallenge is not currently active, there is usually some work left to do. So check out our Iceland Project - MiniChallenge page.

You are welcome to write your profiles in Icelandic.

If you write your profiles in Icelandic, we encourage you to write the headings in Icelandic as well.

There are 4 fixed headings:

If the profile is in both English and Icelandic, then you can keep the English headings and add === Englis === and === Íslenska === as subtitles.

Icelandic names

Iceland has a patriotic naming system, which basically means there are just a handful of hereditary family names in Iceland.

The most important name in Iceland is the first name. When people talk about Jón Þórsson, they never call him Þórsson but always use his first name Jón, often using the place where he lives if they need to specify which Jón they talk about. Patronyms are mostly used in writing and official occasions.

  • Patronyms are derived from the father's first name followed by -son or -dóttir. The above example Jón Þórsson is Jón son of Þór and his sister would be Guðrún Þórsdóttir, daughter of Þór.
  • Matronyms are like the patronyms, but they use the mother's name instead if the father's. If Jón and Guðrún above would have matronyms after their mother Helga they would be Jón Helgusson and Guðrún Helgudóttir.
  • Avonyms would be used to distinguish two people living in a community with the same name. This would then be the paternal grandfather. Let's say that Þór's father was Ólafur. That would make Jón's name Jón Þórsson Ólafssonar. That would tell him apart from Jón Þórsson Eyjólfssonar living next door.
