The Indian Monarchy

The Mughal Emperors were the supreme monarchs of the Mughal Empire, a Muslim dynasty of Turkic-Mongol origin that dominated most of northern India from the 16th to the 18th century. The Mughal Empire was founded by Babur, a descendant of Timur and Genghis Khan, who invaded India in 1526 and defeated the Delhi Sultanate. The Mughal Emperors were known for their military prowess, cultural achievements, religious tolerance, and administrative reforms. Some of the most famous Mughal Emperors include Akbar, who expanded the empire and promoted a syncretic faith called Din-i Ilahi; Shah Jahan, who built the Taj Mahal and other monuments; and Aurangzeb, who enforced a strict version of Islamic law and fought against the Marathas and the Sikhs. The Mughal Empire declined in the 18th century due to internal rebellions, foreign invasions, and the rise of regional powers. The last Mughal Emperor, Bahadur Shah II, was deposed by the British in 1857 after the Indian Rebellion.
