The Japanese Monarchy
The Japanese monarchy, known as the Imperial House of Japan, is the oldest continuous hereditary monarchy in the world. The Imperial House recognizes 126 monarchs, starting with the mythical Emperor Jimmu, traditionally dated to 11 Feb 660 BC. Historical evidence for the first 25 emperors is considered mythical, but there is sufficient evidence of an unbroken agnatic line since the early 6th century, with historically verifiable emperors starting from AD 539 with Emperor Kinmei and continuing up to the current emperor, Naruhito.
