About the Project

The Kelly Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Kelly name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Kelly name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Kellys), by time period (18th Century Kellys), or by topic (Kelly DNA, Kelly Occupations, Kelly Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Also see the related surnames and surname variants.

How to Join

To join the Kelly Name Study, first start out by browsing our current research pages to see if there is a specific study ongoing that fits your interests. If so, feel free to add your name to the Membership list below, post an introduction comment on the specific team page, and then dive right in!

Background

On familysearch.org, I connect to Nicholas De Kelley, born 1100 in Kelley, Devon, England. ( https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/L1DL-KFC). My link on Family Search to Nicholas De Kelley is VERY poorly documented. If we work together, perhaps all Kellys would connect to Nicholas De Kelley.

Hello clan Kelly,

Despite my surname it appears that I'm group 14 Ui Mhaine Kelly. Somewhere up the line a Lloyd lady has some explaining to do! I have been working with Aidan Kelly and his team at the Kelley surname project at FTDNA for number of years now. Recently it was suggested that we investigate WikiTree as a public repository of our research. Going through the learning process. I like what Jarad has done with the group 10 people and I'm using it as a blueprint for other lines we have investigated. It's going to take a while but I'm happy with what I've seen so far. Cheers Steve Bath, Ontario, Canada.

I would like to join the Kelly study. My source ancestor signed his name Kelly (no X) in 1762, but his children, or the recorders, spelled their names both ways. In light of this it would seem the projects should be joined, but not my call. Anyway, a fellow family researcher, we think, had his YDna tested through familytreedna and was placed in R1b Group 12 E. I recently had my daughter's DNA tested. Can the data be uploaded? Can a family tree from Ancestry be uploaded? I don't wish to reenter the data.

I've been working on descendants (generally spelled Kelley, Killey) of David O'Killia, an Irishman who first appeared in about 1652 in what would become Barnstable County (Cape Cod) Massachusetts. My wife is a descendant, her father was born on the Cape (FamilySearch #LDTJ-G9J). Data from the 1962 Kelley genealogy of this family (extensive, but with no source references) has been entered into my database. I've also been adding Kelley data from other sources. I've been adding / coordinating all this with FamilySearch individual pages. Willing to do lookups and share from my database and our southeastern MA reference collection, and from the Wisconsin Historical Society library, which is nearby, when it reopens after the corona virus shutdown. Are there other ways I may help? Dick Ammann, Sun Prairie WI

I would love to join. I'm tired of finding records and adding them and people go in behind me and tell me I'm not family. My father is Charles W Kelly his father is william Bruce Kelly. And then https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/vitals/L28L-TN1 he is my 2 great grandfather. I've gone thru again and rechecked records and found some tombstones that are correct. Even corrected findagrave.com info as well. I've been posting in comments their familysearch.org info so it can be corrected as well. Please I need help to make sure I'm on the right path.

Hi! I created the companion category for your name study (Category:Kelley Name Study). Feel free to edit it. The default for the template is to add the main category, but you can add a line to have a different category. See the ONS template page for details. Give me a holler if you have any questions about categorization.

I also created a redirect, so Project:Kelley (the link for the button from the Kelley surname page) brings you to this page.

Cheers, Liz
