Project: Lionel of Antwerp descendants
Categories: Edward III descents
[ History ][ Next ][ End ] |
This is the 3rd working page.
The second working page gives a list of people who are ggg grandchildren of Edward III and likely to have modern descendants. On this new page here we can trying to go further forward, and at the same time make sure wikitree is as correct and complete as possible.
Because this stage of the project (going past 5 generations) will be a big job, several pages will probably be needed.
This first effort focuses on the descendants of Lionel of Antwerp. Lionel was the oldest son of Edward III who has living descendants.
Thomas Clifford
Edward III -> 1. Lionel -> 2. Phillipa (m Mortimer) -> 3. Elizabeth (m "Hotspur" Percy) -> 4. Elizabeth Percy, (m Clifford) ->

- 6. John Clifford, knt, 9th Lord Clifford, (RA CLIFFORD 16). 2s 1d. m. Margaret Bromflete.
- 7.Henry Clifford KG, 10th Lord Clifford, (RA CLIFFORD 17). 4s 6d from 1st wife Anne St John. 2s 1d from second wife Florence Pudsey. See Brad Verity comment. Here is Richardson's list:
- 8. Henry
- 8. Henry KG (11th Lord Clifford, 1st Earl of Cumberland). Cracroft m. twice and had children from second, Margaret Percy, daughter of Henry Algernon Percy (Earl Northumberland) OVERLAP: she is also a descendant of Lionel. WT also add a Thomas.

- 8. Elizabeth m twice (RA Vol.1 p.494 BOWES 16) 1. Ralph Bowes, knt and 2. William Tonge 1s 1d. 2 Bowes children in WT.
- 9. George Bowes BOWES 17 in RA. m Muriel Eure
- 9. Margery Bowes m Ralph Eure
- 9. George Tonge
- 9. Isabel Tonge m Robert Thirkeld of Denton. That surname is the same as Threlkeld, but this branch of that family does not seem to be a well-known one.
- 8. Jane or Joan m John Hudleston knt. No children in WT.
- 8. Mabel m William FitzWilliam, knt, Earl of Southampton. No children in WT. Wikipedia says no legitimate children. CP 12.i (SOUHAMPTON) agrees.
- 8. Anne m twice (see RA NEED 18) Rob Clifton esq and Ralph Melford esq. WT has them and shows 3 children
- 8. Eleanor m twice (see MAULEVERER 15), Ninian Markenfield knt and John Constable. No children in WT.

- 7.Elizabeth Clifford, m Robert Aske. RA V.1 p.168 ASKE 15 says 4s 8d.
- 7.Henry Clifford KG, 10th Lord Clifford, (RA CLIFFORD 17). 4s 6d from 1st wife Anne St John. 2s 1d from second wife Florence Pudsey. See Brad Verity comment. Here is Richardson's list:
- 6. Roger Clifford, knt m. Joan Courtenay. Courteney table in this project. RA V.4 p.649 SOMERSET 11.iv.d says 1s 2d:
- 7.Charles Clifford. Children not in WT. Collins mentions 2s 1s.
- 7.Mary Clifford m Thomas Wingfield, knt. WT says no issue. But all WT references point to Richardson articles that mention a Thomas, but no mention of a wife Mary Clifford.
- 7. Barbara Clifford said to have married a Drury, and maybe later a Cliburn. (Most Drurys in Suffolk. Her siblings married in East Anglia, which is where her step father's main connections were.) What records exist? Ragg thinks she appears in a record at the time of Perkin Warbeck as a widow? Could she have married a Drury of Besthorpe? (That family had a Clifford marriage and a Coe connection.) There was also a William Drury posted in Berwick from Suffolk.
- 6. Robert Clifford, knight. Involved in Perkin Warbeck incident, and founder of Brackborough Cliffords. wife added, and one son.
- 7. At least 1s Thomas Clifford, who had at least 2s 1d. Visitation. Added the one son that has a known descent to WT:
- 8. Thomas. Issue not in WT.
- 7. At least 1s Thomas Clifford, who had at least 2s 1d. Visitation. Added the one son that has a known descent to WT:
- 6. Thomas Clifford, knight, (Genealogics and Wikitree say no children). Should be better confirmed.
- 6. Elizabeth Clifford m Wm Plumpton and John Hamerton RA V.4 p.392 PLUMPTON 14. At least 2d to 1st husband.
- 7. Margaret Plumpton m John Rocliffe, knt. No children in WT.
- 7. Elizabeth Plumpton m John Sothill or Southill, Esq. of Stoke Faston Leics. 7s 3d. WT gives an unexpected daughter Christina. Has been discussed online by Brad Verity and others here.
- 8. Henry esq. WT has a Henry
- 9. Elizabeth m. William Drury; twin of Joan and prob. sister of Christina, all co-heiresses of Henry.
- 10 Bridget (Drury) Yelverton -> MCA trail
- 9. Elizabeth m. William Drury; twin of Joan and prob. sister of Christina, all co-heiresses of Henry.
- 8. Rob, has HOP bio which says at least 3s. inc. Sir William (also has a bio), 2da.
- 8. Arthur knt,
- 8. Gerard,
- 8 Jn,
- 8. Th,
- 8. Leonard;
- 8. Eliz,
- 8. Anne,
- 8. Joan.
- 8. Henry esq. WT has a Henry
- 6. Maud Clifford. RA V.5 p.104 SUTTON 8 says husbands John Harington (does not mention children or not; Genealogics mentions issue) and Edmund Sutton/Dudley (7s 4d).
- Two daughters with Harrington, Anne and Elizabeth, age about 5 and 3-4 when their father died. Wardships bought by Thomas Stanley-494, 2nd Baron, later 1st Earl. Harrington's brothers occupied the property, claiming it was entailed. Long feud.
- 7. Stanley married Anne Harrington to his 2nd son Edward, Mounteagle, but she died sp. Dugdale is a blatant lie, the Mounteagles had no blood in Hornby
- 7. He married Elizabeth Harrington 1st to Sir John Stanley of Melling, said to be illegitimate son of Lord Stanley's brother John Stanley-1000 of Weaver (there was also a legit son John, dsp). (Vincent's Stanley pedigree marries Elizabeth to a different John Stanley but the dates don't work.) They had 3 daughters, with ongoing issue. Langton, Ashworth.
- 8. Elizabeth's daughter Anne Stanley married a Swift - Geni, Hunter.
- 8. Elizabeth's ?2nd daughter Margaret Stanley married a Grimshaw. Follow-up Farrer, Dugdale (not right - Margaret was granddaughter of Harrington. Note Thomas G had 2 sons called Richard).
- -- Margaret's daughter Anne Grimshaw married a Shuttleworth - Dugdale, see also Dugdale.
- -- Nicholas Grimshaw-120 (b abt 1574) had a sister Ann who probably married a Haydock and a Baildon of Baildon. Probable son Evan Haydock-48 mentioned by Baildon. Had issue.
- -- Nicholas's daughter Jane married Richard Eyves of Fishwick - Dugdale. Had issue.
- -- Many more Lancashire lines to chase
- 8. Elizabeth's daughter Jane Stanley married Sir Thomas Halsall - Vis 1613, Farrer (not correct - Jane's father wasn't his father's heir).
- Sir Thomas Halsall, kntd 1533, d 1539, m Jane Stanley
- Henry, b abt 1521, m Anne Molyneux, heiress of her mother, d 1589
- Jane, m Gabriel Hesketh, of Aughton - Dugdale
- Bartholomew Hesketh, b abt 1546, m Southworth
- Maud, b abt 1534, m Edward Osbaldeston, had issue - Vis 1613
-
- [*1] ouch, Anne (Halsall) is also said to have married Thomas Clifton, though nobody says she married twice. Eg Langton.
- Jane (Stanley) is said to have married 2nd her son-in-law's father John Osbaldeston, no issue (His 1st wife Margaret Stanley was the 2nd Earl's sister)
- Elizabeth (Harrington) m 2nd 1503 (as his 2nd wife of 3) Richard Beaumont-318 of Whitley, no issue.
- 7. Oliver. WT has a source to say he died young. This Dudley book agrees he died without issue.
- 7. John (WT has two Johns, Dudley-736 and Sutton-658 as in RA, but with the same mother, not Maud, unlike in RA See G2G discussion.) The Dudley book says John the son of Maud Clifford died without issue.
- 7. Robert Dudley esq, steward of the lordship of Powys according to RA. WT has a source to say he was an MP in 1539 and died without issue. Hist. Parl.
- 7. Walter. This Dudley book says died without issue.
- 7. Master Richard Dudley D.Th. Precentor of Salisbury.
- 7. Dr. George Dudley LL.D. Rector of Aston-le-Walls, Northants. No issue in WT.
- 7. Thomas Dudley of Yanwath. WT names some wife and children. Big list in CWAAS article.
- 7. Margaret Dudley m John Musgrave knt. (Her aunt apparently married his brother Sir Richard.) Sometimes confused with her half niece who married a Grey of Powis. (The source WT was using thinks Dorothy first m Musgrave, bef Wrottesley, which seems wrong.) Musgrave pedigrees name children, at least Thomas and Ann, and probably more: [3], [4], [5]. Nicolson and Burn thought the family settled at Musgrave Hall or Fairbank, but this seems dubious according to more recent articles. Here is an online tree which thinks it knows a descent.
- 7. Dorothy Dudley m Richard Wrottesley esq. RA V.3 p.686 MACKWORTH 9 says 9s incl Walter esq (m Isabel Harcourt), Th, Jn, Hen, Geo; 9d incl Joan (m Rich Cresset, see MORE 11), Eleanor (m Edm Leversedge and Henry Long knt), Anne (m Th Leveson), Marg (m James Leveson), Eliz, Jane, Isabel, Alice, Marg (m Humph Onslow).
- 7. Jane Sutton m William Middleton, knt. WT and Genealogics name 1s Thomas.
- 7. Alice Dudley, m John Radcliffe, knt. CWAAS article says he was of Derwentwater and transcribes her 1554 will. A more complete account is in this CWAAS article. It seems she had no children.
- 6. Anne (m. Rich Tempest and Wm Conyers), Genealogics says no issue and gives 3rd husband, Thomas Hardy.
- 6. Joan/Jane (m a Musgrave, apparently the brother of her Dudley cousin's husband). Collins says "Simon Musgrave". Such a Joan appears in Musgrave pedigrees marrying a Sir Richard. For example [6]. [7], [8]. Cracrofts page and Foster visitation also calls him Sir Richard. The 1615 visitation, probably used by Betham adds more children, giving 3s 3d. Mary who m John or George Martindale esq, Jane who d unmarried, and a son Thomas (apart from Edward and John). WT adds a daughter who married a Neville. Foster's Musgrave visitation pedigree, Nicolson and Burn, Jefferson's version of the pedigree give all or most of these as Edward's children. (Foster gives two daughters who married Markendalls though.)
- 7. Edward Musgrave is already in Wikitree. Nicolson and Burn say he was styled "of Caterlen"? T.B Graham's CWAAS article names 2s. Some children seem confirmed in this early pedigree, but the others may be to his first wife.
- 8? Margaret Musgrave (Nicolson and Burn say from first wife, Betham says a sister) who married a Heron (Old pedigrees say of Chipchase) appears in Foster's Clifford visitation pedigree. In Betham's Baronetage he even puts here in both generations! Here is a website showing a claimed line, according to which Heron-537 would be Margaret's son. Presumably Heron-541 is an ancestor.
- 8? Mary m a Martindale (Nicolson and Burn say from first wife, Betham says a sister)
- 8. William Musgrave.
- 8. Edward. Maybe died young.
- 8. Simon Musgrave.
- 8. Elizabeth Musgrave m John Neville. Position in early visitations seems clear. Example: [9].
- 8. Jane/Joan d unmarried?
- 8? Magdalene, or Mawdelyn. [10], [11] m Thomas Blenkinsop Esq of Helbeck. Wikitree has probably not got the Blenkinsops right and is mainly worked towards providing an Edward III descent to a Hilton family! Compare to Nicolson and Burn.
- 7. John a clergyman, appears in T.B Graham's CWAAS article.
- 7. Edward Musgrave is already in Wikitree. Nicolson and Burn say he was styled "of Caterlen"? T.B Graham's CWAAS article names 2s. Some children seem confirmed in this early pedigree, but the others may be to his first wife.
- 6. Margaret (m Robert Carr). WT shows no children. Genealogics shows 8! Old pedigree which might be source [12]. Rumours of bad pedigrees [13]. A Tempest pedigree [14] (searching for the one daughter with issue named). There was at least one Carr family important among the marcher families who also interacted with other families in this group such as the Herons.
Mary (Clifford) Wentworth
Edward III -> 1. Lionel -> 2. Phillipa (m Mortimer) -> 3. Elizabeth (m "Hotspur" Percy) -> 4. Elizabeth Percy, (m Clifford)->
Generation 5. Mary. RA: NETTLESTEAD 16. RA V.4 p.218 says m Philip Wentworth 1s 2d:
- 6. Henry Wentworth. RA NETTLESTEAD 17. m twice, 2s 4d and no issue. (Second wife Elizabeth Neville is an Edward III descendant, but not via Lionel of Antwerp.) From 1st wife Anne Say:
- 7. Richard knt, NETTLESTEAD 18. with wife Anne Tyrell 3s 5d WT only shows 1s! Genealogics at least adds 2d with issue.
- 8. Th knt (NETTLESTEAD 19 m Edw III descendant),
- 8. Phil,
- 8. Anne,
- 8. Eliz,
- 8. Marg (m Chris Glenham esq and Francis Colby esq),
- 8. Thomasine (m Richard Pinder),
- 8. Dorothy (m Lionel Tollemache esq).
- 7. Edward. Genealogics and WT show no marriage or children. Genealogics says died aged 12.
- 7. Elizabeth. RA says m 3 times, and follows under WYNDHAM 15 (V.5 p.433) which says 1s Thomas, knt. WT shows 2s. Genealogics also names 2 daughters.
- Her Wyndham son started a cadet branch of Wyndhams, see Vis. Norfolk. Leo shows a gateway. Jamestowne Society shows a burgess - not the same person, but possibly his father.
- 7. Margery. RA says m John Seymour, knt of Wolf Hall, and follows in SEYMOUR 19. WT has 9 children. Genealogics has 7.
- 7. Dorothy m Robert Broughton, knt. WT goes no further. Wikipedia. Perhaps Robert only had children from first marriage?
- 7. Jane. Genealogics and WT show no marriage or children. Genealogics says d aged 9 or more.
- 7. Richard knt, NETTLESTEAD 18. with wife Anne Tyrell 3s 5d WT only shows 1s! Genealogics at least adds 2d with issue.
- 6. Margaret, m Th Cotton. WT and Genealogics show no children. However there seems a reasonable chance, apparently, that they had a daughter who married into the D'Oyley family. See soc.med.gen. Copinger
- 7.Ann Cotton. Now added as an uncertain daughter of Margaret. Married to D'Oyley and has descendants.
- 6. Elizabeth. Genealogics says m De La See and had issue. WT and Genealogics show 2d Jane and Elizabeth, but how many sons did she have? John? Martin? Poulson perhaps helpful. Some of the WT articles cite TAG 1994. It seems all descents are through 2 daughters.
- 7. Jane De La See. Married Peter Hildyard esq of Winestead, YKS. (RA V.4 p.639 SKEPPER 17 says 3s Peter, Rich, Chris esq, 7d incl Isabel (SKEPPER 18) 5s 4d, wife of "Christopher", wife of Homes, wife of Fotherby, Eliz and Jane.) WT shows 2 children and the profile has been worked on by Magna Carta project. Marriage is on line 16 in Foster's chart. Possible further descendants: Mary da of Richard Hildyard m John Bethell, Bethell chart, but not clear whether Hugh Bethell is son of Mary Hildyard or the 2nd wife. More: Isabel Hildyard m Ralph Legard (Skepper line).
- 7. Elizabeth De La See. Married Roger Kelke of Barnetby by Wold, Lincs (RA V.3 p.410 KELKE 18 says 1s.) Is covered by Magna Carta project. One son on WT.
- 7. John De La See. currently marked as "disputed existence" on WT, with no children. Poulson says he died without issue.
- 7. Martin De La See. WT has him (without issue) but without naming a mother. Poulson makes him a son of Margaret Wentworth. However the note says he married an Elizabeth who was daughter of John Lord Clifford, making it sound like a misunderstanding (his father also named Martin married a Clifford descendant). In any case Poulson says he predeceased his father.
Henry Percy KG
Edward III-> 1. Lionel -> 2. Phillipa (m Mortimer) -> 3. Elizabeth (m "Hotspur" Percy) -> 4. Henry 5th Lord Percy m Eleanor Neville (gen. 3 via Joan Beaufort/Neville) -> gen. 5. and 4. Henry 6th Lord Percy m Eleanor Poynings-> 6. and 5. Henry

WikiTree gives her a doubtful 2nd marriage, to Sir Ralph Ryther, with issue. Richardson and other sources do name a Ryther-Percy marriage but she was too old, and Ralph's wife was Maud Percy, not Margaret. Brad Verity reckons she was a daughter of the 4th Earl, though he had to invent a new one.
