The Luxembourg Monarchy
The Duchy of Luxembourg rose to the rank of Grand Duchy in 1815, although it wasn't until 1890 that the country gained its independence from the Netherlands. Grand Duke Adolphe then became the first sovereign of the Nassau-Weilbourg dynasty. Today, Luxembourg is the world’s only sovereign Grand Duchy. Since 1815, Luxembourg has had nine monarchs, including the incumbent, Henri. The current heir apparent is Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume.
