Project: Pony Express
Categories: Westward Ho | Pony Express
The Pony Express Project is a Sub-Project of the Westward Ho Project
See also Space: Pony Express.
The Pony Express began on Apr. 3, 1860 and consisted of relays of men riding horses carrying saddlebags of mail across a 2000-mile trail from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California. Telegraphs put them out of business on Oct. 24, 1861, but during their 19 months of operation, they employed 80 men at any given time.
Our Mission: This project is for highlighting the profiles of all those brave men who risked their lives to deliver the mail while riding the pony express.

Goals
The goal of the Pony Express Project is to create and develop profiles on WikiTree for all of the Pony Express Riders. To meet this goal:
- Add profiles for the Pony Express riders, checking for existing profiles to avoid duplication. If any duplicate profiles exist, request merges, starting with the oldest generation.
- If profiles were loaded by GEDCOM, use WikiTree Styles and Standards to clean up residue and broken links.
- Search out original rather than derivative documentation and add sources.
- Write comprehensive, well-sourced biographies.
- Add the Pony Express template to the profiles along with any relevant categories.
- Make sure profiles of family members are correct and documented.
- Profiles need to be linked to the greater WikiTree. Try to find the connection.
To-Do List
- A list of the Pony Express Riders can be found on the Pony Express Project page. Profiles need to be created for any of the names found on the list that are not yet highlighted by a link to their WikiTree profiles.
- Please check to make sure that they have not yet been added before creating a new profile.
- Once you have created the profile, please edit the project page by adding a link to their profile.
- Proceed with the list of goals we have established for developing and improving the profiles for the Pony Express Riders.
