Current Head of State and Head of Government
Romania is a semi-presidential republic with a multi-party system. The government is divided into three branches: the executive, legislative, and judicial. The President, elected for a five-year term, holds significant executive power, overseeing foreign policy and national defense. The Prime Minister, appointed by the President and supported by Parliament, leads the government’s day-to-day operations. The Parliament is bicameral, consisting of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.

The Romanian Monarchy
The Kingdom of Romania emerged in 1881 when Carol I was proclaimed king. The Romanian monarchy lasted until 1848, when the Parliament declared Romania a republic, and King Michael I was forced to abdicate. Michael went into exile, but he never renounced his right to the throne. Post-Communist Era: After the fall of communism in 1989, Michael, who remained steadfast in his commitment to Romania’s well-being, returned to Romania, drawing immense crowds. Public support for restoring the monarchy increased over time, reaching an all-time high of 31% after Michael’s death.
