About the Project

The ROWLEY Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the ROWLEY name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the ROWLEY name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual team studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as by Branch, geographically (England ROWLEY's), by time period (18th Century ROWLEY's), or by topic (ROWLEY DNA, ROWLEY Occupations, ROWLEY Statistics). This study specifically includes a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

There were about 40 Rowley U.S. immigrants that are listed with descendants on the research site http://www.RowleyResearch.org up to 1880. In addition there are over 100 U.S. immigrant Rowleys (Rowley, Rawley, Rowlee, Rolle, Rowell, Rowel, and various other spellings) listed in the U.S. 1880 census that need additions other than their own children and linkages between them. Welcome in joining us in adding to the family relations here. None of the branches are related to others, to the best of our knowledge as shown by DNA testing.

We also need to add the branches from the other countries, such as England, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. (as known so far)

Surname Variants

Rowley, Roley, Rawley, Rawle, Rollee, Ruhl, Rowlee, Rowell, Rowel, Raleigh

(The project leader will add them as they occur to her or appear in her research as various spellings. You can add them above as well. For example, Ruhl immigrated into the USA and then two generations down some of the children changed their name to Rowley.)

Task List

  • Enter and identify here, as possible, the different known Rowley, etc, immigrants into the USA based on study that prepared the web site http://RowleyResearch.org. To add them to this list, please add Category:Head of Line, Rowley Name Study surrounded by two square brackets or use the Category button to add the category to the profile. See Henry Rowley who was the head of line for most Rowleys in the USA. Include here the Rowleys from the other immigrant-based countries, like Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa
  • Enter and identify here the head of line for different Rowley etc from other countries. Again add them to the Category:Head of Line, Rowley Name Study list by putting that category in their profile.
  • Find a Rowley for each identified Rowley where we can get Y-DNA and get the DNA. If female, can you get your father, brother or cousin to participate? The Profile manager for this page had to use a second cousin. We want to be able to identify the DNA by the various Rowley trees. In FamilyTree.com, this has already been accomplished with five individuals back to Henry Rowley. Now to get them over here and to check their trees as well. Add them to Category:DNA Study, Rowley Name Study
  • Use DNA to relate the previously unlinked branches identified in the first task to real immigrants. Add them to the Category:Unconnected_Heads, Rowley Name Study by adding this category to their profile (without the : at the beginning of category). Once someone descended from an Unconnected Head enters their Y-DNA, the one who has the profile with the DNA should add to their profile the Category:DNAConnections DNA Profiles along with the other information requested.
