The Saudi Monarchy
The House of Saud traces its origins to Muhammad bin Saud, the chief of an Arabian village who allied with the Wahhabi religious movement in the 18th century. The House of Saud has had four phases:
The Sheikhdom of Diriyah (1446–1744), when the House of Saud was a local tribal power allied with the Wahhabi religious movement.
The Emirate of Diriyah (1744–1818), when the House of Saud expanded its territory and influence under the leadership of Abdulaziz bin Muhammad and his son Saud bin Abdulaziz. They also faced opposition from the Ottoman Empire and the Sharif of Mecca, who considered them as heretics and rebels.
The Emirate of Nejd (1824–1891), when the House of Saud regained its power after the destruction of Diriyah by the Ottomans. The House of Saud was led by Turki bin Abdullah and his descendants, who consolidated their rule over central Arabia and fought against the Al Rashid family of Ha’il, their rivals in the north.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (1932–present), when the House of Saud unified most of Arabia under the rule of Abdulaziz bin Abdul Rahman, also known as Ibn Saud in the West. He founded the modern state of Saudi Arabia in 1932 and established a monarchy based on his family and Wahhabism. He was succeeded by six of his sons: Saud, Faisal, Khalid, Fahd, Abdullah, and Salman.
