For a full list of participants, see the badge report.

This project needs a coordinator. If you are interested, please contact Sarah Heiney or Ellen Smith.

It is not necessary that you be related to someone who lived in the state of South Dakota or live there yourself to join. Anyone with an interest is welcome! If you would like to participate, please do the following:

  1. Answer our G2G post and we'll award you the US History Project badge.
  2. Add us_history and South_Dakota to your list of followed tags. That way you'll see all of our discussions in your G2G Feed.
  3. Please see our list of goals for a basic overview for ways you can help.

Goals

The overall goals of the US History Project are to create and develop profiles on WikiTree for those who lived in the state of South Dakota. To meet these goals:

  1. Add South Dakota-related profiles, checking for existing profiles to avoid duplication. If any duplicate profiles exist, request merges, starting with the oldest generation.
  2. If profiles were loaded by GEDCOM, use WikiTree Styles and Standards to clean up residue and broken links.
  3. Search out original rather than derivative documentation and add sources.
  4. Write comprehensive, well-sourced biographies.
  5. Make sure profiles of all family members are correct and documented.
  6. Profiles need to be linked to the greater WikiTree. Try to find the connection.

List of Things to Do

  1. Need space pages created and developed for South Dakota counties and linked to this page. Would you like to lead a county project?
  2. If you have any South Dakota state resources that you are willing to do lookups, please add them to the South Dakota Resources Page.
  3. If you live in South Dakota, please consider adding your name to the South Dakota Research Assistance page.

Ongoing List of Things to Do

  1. Cemeteries in South Dakota need to be photographed and the categories added to profiles on WikiTree. See the South Dakota Cemeteries Project
  2. Add profiles for those who obtained land grants and homesteaded in South Dakota. See the Homesteaders Project
  3. Help develop the Native Americans Project with information about South Dakota state tribes.
  4. Work on South Dakota's unconnected and unsourced profiles.
  5. Add profiles for the men who died in World War I, serving from South Dakota for the South Dakota in the Great War project and for the Roll of Honor project.
