Goals

This is a One Name Study to collect together in one place everything about the surname Troth and the variants of that name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join our study to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect.

Origins of Troth

The modern surname Troth or Troath derives from the Middle English "trowthe, trouthe", good faith, loyalty, from the Olde English pre 7th Century "treowth", truth, a derivative of "treow", true.

As a nickname surname it would have been bestowed on someone considered to be outstandingly loyal and faithful, possibly a servant or retainer. "Troth" may also be an "oath-surname", acquired by the habitual use of the common phrase "By my troth" to emphasise the truthfulness of an assertion.

The word Troth is still used today in Wedding vows '"I plight thee my Troth" or " I pledge thee my Troth", which simply means: I promise my loyalty, or according to The Collins Dictionary:

1. To make a promise of marriage
2. To give one's solemn promise

The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Roger Troth, which was dated 1327, in the "Suffolk Subsidy Rolls", during the reign of King Edward 11, known as "Edward of Caernafon", 1307-1327.

• The best place to start is with your own Troth ancestors. Go over the profiles and see if you can improve them.

Look to:

• Add dates if they are not there.

• Remember, BMD registers are when the event was registered, not when it happened. This is particularly important when it comes to Birth Date. Wikitree does not recognise this when GEDCOMs are uploaded. If you don't know the exact date add the year if known.

• If you don't know the birth or death date for a person, you're encouraged to estimate a date. Help with Estimated Dates. Remember to add {{Estimated Date}} to the top of the profile above the == Biography == headline.

• Add sources if they are not on the profile. Otherwise add {{Unsourced}} to the top of the profile.

• Build a bio that provides, as a minimum, enough information to ensure the profile does not get incorrectly merged.

• Are they Genealogically Defined ? Add [[Space:Genealogically Defined|Genealogically Defined]] below the categories and above the ==Biography== headline on the profile.
