The Ottoman Monarchy

The Ottoman Empire was one of the mightiest and longest-lasting dynasties in world history. This Islamic-run superpower ruled large areas of the Middle East, Eastern Europe and North Africa for more than 600 years. The founder of the Ottoman Empire was Osman I, a Turkmen tribal leader who established his rule in northwestern Anatolia in the late 13th century. He is also known as Osman Ghazi or Osman Gazi in Turkish. He expanded his domain through conquests and alliances with other Turkish beyliks, and he is considered the first sultan of the Ottoman dynasty. The last ruler of the Ottoman Empire was Mehmed VI, who reigned from 4 July 1918 until 1 November 1922, when the Ottoman sultanate was abolished and replaced by the Republic of Turkey. He was also the penultimate Ottoman caliph, as the caliphate was abolished on 3 March 1924 by the Turkish Grand National Assembly. Mehmed fled to Italy after his exile and died in Sanremo in 1926.
