Washington Surname

The Washington surname is a locational name from the pre-7th century. The surname usually descends from the town of Washington in County Durham. There is also a vililage of the same name in West Sussex County. Both places are recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086.

The surname translates as " the settlement of the Wassa people". The word "wassa" itself means "hunting," suggesting the meaning, "the hunting lodge."

One of the earliest mentions of the name is Robert de Wasshington, in 1395; John Washington, in 1401; Laurence Wasshington in 1567; and Philip Washington in 1605. John Washington, whose great grandson George was the first President of the United States, emigrated during Oliver Cromwell's insurrection of 1657 in England.[1]

Hi! I just spent a bit of time searching for name studies of famous Virginia names and got so frustrated that I started a category to collect them.

If you'd be so inclined, would you add

[Category:Name Studies in Virginia]

to this page (but with double brackets).

Thanks!

P.S. Category:Name Studies in Virginia says pages listed should be findable using the surname with Project - right off the bat I find an exception: Project:Washington goes to the subcategory of US History for Washington State.

edit - the category I created (Name Studies in Virginia) was deleted in 2019.
