Biography

John PROSSER was born circa 1672 in Somerset County, England. He died in circa 1714 in Westerly town, Washington County, Rhode Island. He married Ruth (--?--) circa 1697 in Rhode Island.

John and Ruth had the following known children:

1) Jonathan Prosser b. bef. 1699 in RI
2) Martha Prosser b. 19 Oct 1704 in RI,
3) Catherine Prosser b. circa 1711 in RI
4) Ichabod Prosser b. bef. 1714 in RI
5) John Prosser b. bef. 1714 in RI

On 6 Aug 1708, in Westerly, Rhode Island, John Prosser witnessed a land transfer from John and Susannah Shaw to their son, Joseph Shaw. [1]

On 4 Dec 1710, John Prosser of Westerly bought 50 acres of land from William Gallup of Stonington - which was granted to William by the Town of Stonington in 1683 … part of the “Cattapresetts” purchase.

On 2 Oct 1711, a General Recorders Deed: quit-claiming and confirming to 31 men of Westerly, including John Prosser, and three of Stonington, 5300 acres as platted, South, by Pawcatuck River, East, by Maxon’s Purchase, North, by vacant lands, [and] west, by colony line. [2] This purchase was "known as the 'Fine Purchase', embracing all of the western part of the present town of Hopkinton, Rhode Island." [3]

A deed of John Prosser, husbandman, was recorded on 19 Nov 1714 in Westerly,[4] that “… gives to his children: Jonathan, 30 acres, Ichabod, 30 acres, daughters Martha and Katherine each 7½ acres; total of 75 [55] acres in Westerly bounded on North by Clement Neff, West by William Stewart, South by John Richardson & Joseph Maxim, Sr. Daughters are to sell to brothers before anyone else.” Also [per Deed], recorded on 29 Dec 1714 of “80 acres each to Ichabod, John, Jonathan, Katherine, and Martha.” "But always to be understood that its hereby intended in the promises that I myself shall have the use improvement advantage and benefit of the aforesaid tract of land during my natural life without any obstruction lett or hindrance". [5]
