Biography

Benjamin was a son of David Provoost and Grietje Jelis, who had married in Amsterdam (Netherlands) in 1637. [1] Although all of their children's baptisms were recorded in New Amsterdam,[1] David Provoost was a Dutch West-India Company employee who from April 1642 to June 1647 was in charge of Fort Good Hope in Hartford, Connecticut, where some of his children undoubtedly were born. The records of Benjamin's first marriage indicate that he was "van Hertfort in N. Engelant" (from Hartford in New England).

Benjamin Provoost was baptized 17 June 1646 in New Netherland, together with his twin brother Elias. Baptism was recorded at the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam, New Netherland; sponsors were: Cornelis Van Tienhoven-secrts., Olof Stephenszen Van Courtlant, Anneken Loockermans, Jillis Van Brug, Aren Koos and his wife.[2]

Marriages

Benjamin Provoost married twice. His first marriage was to Sara Barents on June 11, 1670 (marriage banns June 3, 1670) at New Amsterdam. One son David was baptized on March 6, 1671 at New Amsterdam. Probably Sara died short after the birth of David, because Benjamin remarried the same year (intentions registered 5 November 1671), to Elsje Alberts. David Provoost and his second wife Elsje had sixteen children.[1]

Pending merge Provoost-203 and Provoost-2
Provoost-203 and Provoost-2 appear to represent the same person because: Same parents, dates, locations.
Provoost-140 and Provoost-2 appear to represent the same person because: This newly imported duplicate is the oldest paternal ancestor in this chain in need of a merge into the NNS PPP. No tree conflicts. Alternate data is in the bios. Thanks!
