Hazel was born on November 9, 1919 in Murray Harbour, Prince Edward Island. She was the daughter of A. Samuel Prowse and Bessie Hicks. She spent her early years in Murray Harbour. In 1932, the family moved to New Brunswick.
On August 11, 1936, Hazel married Gerald Williamson in Moncton, New Brunswick. Although Hazel claimed to be 19 years old at the time of her marriage, she was in fact just 16.
In 1939, Hazel had two young children and was pregnant with her third when tragedy struck. First the family's house burned down. Not long after, on May 20, 1939, Gerald was in an automobile accident, from which he suffered serious injuries. He died of these injuries 6 days later, on May 26, 1939.
In 1950, Hazel married Ralph Sherwood in Toronto. They lived in Prince George, British Columbia. She died in 2001.
